Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry Mould in the shower 2Oct 30, 2011 7:44 pm Tea tree oil and water in a spray bottle has worked for us.. Huge mould issue at our place too. Re: Mould in the shower 3Nov 02, 2011 12:15 pm This is the best mould remover we have ever used. You can buy it at bunnings. For mouldy grout use neat apply and wait for 20 minutes than rinse. For silicon apply neat and let sit for 6 hours than come back and re apply for another 6 hours your silicon should be brand new. Read the label directions but I use it it at full strength for mouldy silicon and grout but if it is your wall that is mouldy than you can dilute 1-5 or 1-10 but wear a chemical mask. Craig Re: Mould in the shower 4Dec 16, 2011 4:51 pm that lush lady (cant remember her name) says oil of cloves kills the spores, bleach just bleaches them, doesnt kill them. I havent tried it, but she dilutes it in water and sprays and leaves for a bit. and then cleans with a cloth. This was on the ceiling though. they never came back after she did it (the spores) sorry not much help am I! Re: Mould in the shower 5Dec 16, 2011 4:57 pm Household bleach is going to give you good results as it will kill the mould rather than just washing away the black top layer of mould as long as you give it time to soak in. Bleach is a sodium hypochlorite solution which is exactly what the Clean 'n' Easy product is but plain bleach doesn't come in a fancy bottle and is cheaper. (See this link for the Material safety Data sheet for Clean'n'Easy http://www.chemtech.net.au/BC36%20Mould ... 20MSDS.pdf) If you don't want to use chemicals you could try one of those steam cleaners. as the heat gives you the best chance of killing the mould spores and reducing the frequency of cleaning. Keeping the bathroom well ventilated and running the fan for a time after you have showered will help slow down the return of the mould. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! After the qld floods they were told not to use bleach because it didn't kill the mould. They were told to use clove oil. Re: Mould in the shower 7Mar 28, 2012 8:07 am It is a myth that bleach kills mould. The bleach will bascially discolour the mould and you think it is gone but in reality the mould is still there and the mould will feed on the bleach and it won't be long before you see it come back. You need to keep the area well ventilated and run the fan for 10-15minutes after a shower. Vinegar and non chemical solutions to clean the area with microfibre clothes works best and kiwi is right, cloves will help prevent the mould from coming back but the reason the mould appeared in the first place needs to be fixed, e.g. a leaking tap. There are some great websites with specific info. PM me if you would like details. Re: Mould in the shower 8Apr 04, 2012 11:05 am I have tried Shannon Lush's oil of cloves spray in the bathroom. It doesn't seem to work (but it does work a treat on the canopy of my boat). Bleach doesn't work either. I am looking at digging out the grout and starting again but before this I might have a try at either Selleys Grout Stain Whitener or Decorator'z Mate grout colour. Anyone tried either of these products? Re: Mould in the shower 9Apr 04, 2012 4:01 pm We've used Exit Mould in the past and that worked for us .... http://www.product review.com.au/p/exit-mould-stain-remover-trigger-pack.html For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!! Re: Mould in the shower 10Apr 09, 2012 4:55 pm Use some tea tree oil directly on the mould to kill it. I used a cotton bud dipped in it. Then make up a spray bottle with a little vinegar, some metho, cloth oil and some eucalyptus to use for regular cleaning. Vinegar kills mould spores, but if you apply it directly to grout, you have to rinse it off as it is acidic and can eat away at grout. Metho in the spray bottle speeds up drying time as it is alcohol. Eucalyptus just smells nice. Have been doing this for a while. Bleach does not kill mould - just bleaches it white. Did anyone see the TV show "Is your House Killing You"? They use vinegar to get rid of mould in houses. Bleach is not good to inhale, can burn skin and bleaches clothes. I used to be a bleach devotee, now use the above. Have cleaned a mouldy kitchen in a rental property where the walls and ceiling were black with mould. I just wiped over with vinegar. Gone! No chemicals. And no smell. No damage to paint on walls. Re: Mould in the shower 11Apr 09, 2012 6:19 pm Used the Selleys Rapid Mould Killer (worked a treat!), scraped out the old silicone around the bathtop (bath in shower) and washed tiles then applied Selleys Grout Stain Whitener and redid the silicone (Selleys Wet Area Silicone) and the bathroom looks like new! I know I'm sounding like a Selleys salesman but the products go well together and the total cost was under $30. I highly recommend the grout whitener as once I got the hang of the applicator it was really fast and easy to use and clean up was also a breeze. I was expecting to waste my entire Easter replacing grout. Instead I played some golf! Re: Mould in the shower 12Apr 13, 2012 3:35 am Although all these answer are helpful, unfortunately the solutions given here are not permanent. Due to most standard grouts only being mould resistant NOT mould proof and also due to them only being water resistant and NOT water proof. You are always going to find that no matter how hard you try, the fact that moisture is present if not on top of the surface but just below and little air flow along with other elements. You are doomed to have mould. Even the best grout on the market which is your Epoxy grout will not say their grout is mould proof, even though I would say it is the closest grout to it and still have seen no signs of mould in 4yrs (add alittle additive with your epoxy grout gives it an even stonger fight against mould) then spend the money on a really good sealant like MAXISIL SILICONE SEALANT probably the best silicone on the market atm. Combine the epoxy grout with the Maxisil silicone and in my opinion you will have longer lasting results than your standard grouts and silicones. This is the best fight you have against mould and don't get me wrong, just because you decide to use these products, don't think you will never have to clean again. This certainly doesn't look good. I would be engaging with an independent inspector to have a look at this.
