Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Oct 24, 2011 1:56 pm Hi all,
Long-time lurker, first time poster. I've just finished my first real attempt at any kind of renovation (beyond painting and installing new doors) in our first home. Thought I’d start on something a little easier before hitting the bathrooms. Taken me 3 full weekends to get this far (a curious 15 month old girl doesn’t help) So far I've: - Removed old laundry - Frosted windows (couldn’t fit blinds in with new laundry cabinets and sliding door, hides ugly fence too) - Moved all taps below bench height, I would have preferred leave the sink taps on the wall but the new layout meant they'd be slightly off centre, the OCD in me would allow that... My first attempt at plumbing anyways, no leaks yet - Installed power point below bench height for washing machine - Move light switch (all electrical done by sparky mate) - Install cabinets (all ikea except handles) So now I’m gearing up for my first attempt at any sort of tiling and am going to start on the splashback area. This is where I’m struggling, we just can’t work out what we think will look half decent and I would love to hear people opinions. I'm open to anything in there, glass, tiles paint etc., At this stage Tiling seems like the cheaper and more suitable option. The missus keeps mentioning subway style tiles but I'm concerned they may look a bit dated for the laundry? Thoughts? I’m not completely against them I have also been considering just regular sized (300x300?) white tiles with either a horizontal feature line or something a bit different and maybe a vertical feature line off centre from the sink. Anyways my creativity is pathetic and would really appreciated hearing what others might do if they had to fill that area. Here's a couple of pics of the laundry as it is at the moment and as it was. Thanks a heap in advance Next job is getting rid of the rest of that ugly wooden vinyl and laying some tiles (why did anyone think that was a good idea) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: First Reno Attempt, Help Me Finish The Laundry. 2Oct 24, 2011 3:08 pm Firstly well done - your laundry looks great. Subway tiles are gorgeous when done right. The American's love them - you only have to look at the kitchens and bathrooms on www.gardenweb.com's forums and they can look fantastic. We personally chose a mosaic tile for our splash - they are around 5cm a square and pick up the green from my c'stone benchtop. Not to everyone's taste but I like them. I would never have done glass but that was more a cost decision - my benchtop is 3.5m long so was trying to be cost efficient which was tiles for me. Your area isn't massive so glass may not be too expensive. What about an acrylic splash? Akril / Metaline are some other choices that may suit - you don't have to worry about heat only water in a laundry (ie no open flame). Some things are worth waiting for. Ah yer hadn't thought about that, acrylic will be a bit more reasonable in terms of price as well The area is fairly small also, approximately 0.5m by 1.6m. Cheers Re: First Reno Attempt, Help Me Finish The Laundry. 4Oct 24, 2011 3:44 pm How did you frost the windows please - we have a sliding door like yours in our laundry - is it sthicky sthuff like contact that you peel and stick? Your laundry is looking great. The acrylic splashback will be easier to keep clean than grout and tiles - just watch the silicone at the bench. The frosting is budgo reno grade lol, it was a roll of "frosting" I got from bunnings, $16 for a 2m by 1m sheet. No fun to install but watch a few youtube videos and you should be right but here how I did it. - Make sure the window is completely clean, i cleaned it a few times and a few differenct ways, scraping the whole surface with a razor blade is good. - Taped it up on the wall - As the missus pulls the contact backing off I was spraying (soaking it) it with a mixture of baby shampoo and water (baby shampoo has a good pH for it) By keeping it wet it kills the static charge and stops it from curling. - Make sure the window is completely drenched in the same solution - With help from the missus apply to the window ensuring theres a bit of overlap on all edges, dont worry about bubbles -Spray the surface with more water/shampoo mix and used a plastic scraper to push the water towards the edges (keep wetting the surface, dont do scrap on a dry surface incase you tear the film) - push into the corners and use a very sharp (new blade is best) stanley knife to cut the excess - go back and push any extra bubbles out (remember to wet surface) Any questions flick me a PM Re: First Reno Attempt, Help Me Finish The Laundry. 7Oct 26, 2011 2:12 pm love the laundry! the frosted glass is brilliant idea! and handy if you do it right. just like tinting your own windows looks very smart and fresh Harrisdale backyard finally done! Re: First Reno Attempt, Help Me Finish The Laundry. 8Oct 26, 2011 3:48 pm Great job The before and after picutres are amazing aren't they? I think white tiles would look lovely and fresh - you have colour on your benchtop and it will make the space look bigger too. In the end we just went basic white 300x100 tiles, trying to elongate and brighten up the room. Finished grouting yesterday, fairly happy with my first tiling attempt. Tiles just need a bit more buffing in the pics and grout is still wet from my cleaning in spots. The tiles were the perfect choice, and not sure if you realise, but 300x100 is almost subway tile size anyway. Classic choice that will never date!
