Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Aug 26, 2011 10:32 pm The last few weeks the floor waste in the toilet has been smelly. I removed the grate and poured some drain cleaner in there and the smell went away for a couple of days. But it's back, so I had a look in there and noticed something in the bottom of the water. I used a long pair of tongs and pulled out a piece of black rubber. It's a cylinder, about 5 inches long with a whole through the side of it. Bit worried that it may be part of some sort of sewer backlow system. There was also a bit of gravely stuff. The house is about 25 years old. Anyone know what this rubber thing is? Should I call a plumber before the #%)% hits? normette Building a Firstyle, Oran 30 aka THE BIG 'O' Re: Smelly Toilet Floor Waste 2Aug 27, 2011 9:32 am I am not a plumber but my guess is that the s bend leaking, the water in the s bend acts a barrier to stop sewer smells coming though. Maybe try to pour water down the waste then after the level has settled (allow a couple of minutes) make the water level. Once the smell returns check the water level against you high mark and I bet it has fallen by about 20 to 30mm at least. If that is your problem you can easily fix the problem if you can access the plumbing under the house, if your house is on a slab better wait for a plumber to advise the easiest fix. Could be completely wrong if that rubber thing has anything to do with it.
