Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jul 27, 2011 9:36 pm I don't know if it's just our bad luck or it's a common problem but every shower we've had (tile base) ends up leaking. Normally causing the vanity kick boards to swell. We are about to build a new house and I'm wondering can we sink the shower base (by a couple of inches). That way we are not reliant on the seal between the shower floor and shower glass/screens? Thanks Re: Sunken Shower 2Jul 28, 2011 10:09 am Hi P&K, Yes, you can ask the builder to inset the shower so that it is just below floor level. We have done it and it will do just what you're saying, keep the water in rather than have it trickle out the bottom. You need to know what base will be going in and then match the depth. If you're having a 'regular" tiled shower, would (could) you get this done so that you "stepped down" INTO the shower ? That way there would be no "hob" around the perimeter of your shower ..... We've looked at 4,096 display homes so far and have never seen this. Anyone got a photomograff they could share ? Thanks, P_D. (May be slightly less then 4,096 display homes, but it DOES seem like that many !! ) . Ours will actually be tiled inside but there is a base they put in so that everything will line up and be even on all sides. The edges of the base also allow the splashback tiles (or glass) to be laid at an even point. You don't end up seeing the base at all but it makes all the tiling easier to match up. The one we are using is called the "Universal Base for rear channel grate" but there are others with different waste positions; http://www.universalshowerbase.com/deta ... oductid=24 SK Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=34120 Handover 23 Dec 11 Squatting 21 Dec 11 Fixed 12 Oct 11 Plastered 31 Aug 2011 Framed 7 June 2011 Site Start 7 Feb 2011 Land Titled 18 Jan 2010 Land Deposit 25 Jun 2009 Re: Sunken Shower 8Sep 08, 2011 10:35 pm Re: Sunken Shower 10Oct 03, 2011 7:15 pm Try and get a base with 4 sided lip to help prevent that. Marbletrend do one, Reece's Posh (poly marble), Formed S3 (Can be made to be entry level), Showerline 4 way, Problem with "universal" bases, you still have to tile over, grout issues remain. I'll look into different shower heads and ask the plumber about some engineering and see what he says.
