If your bathroom is upstairs, is it tiled behind your vanities? My tiler seems to think that everything should be tiled :s but is he just looking at getting more $$$ Re: Multi storey houses and tiling behind vanities 2Jun 12, 2011 11:07 am blueblueblue Should Gyprock Walls behind vanities be waterproofed? For starters you shouldn't have Gyproc in a wet area, you should have a proper water proof board such as fibre cement. In which case a waterproofing membrane is NOT needed. blueblueblue What about tiling? Is it best to tile behind vanities? It is a matter of personal taste. Some people like the look of having tiles behind some like the tiles hard up against the vanity. What they did in my place was a good compromise I think. They tiled one tile behind the vanity in my tiles and the rest they just used left overs from another job. So my vanity has the (IMO) cleaner tile behind look without wasting tiles. blueblueblue My tiler seems to think that everything should be tiled :s but is he just looking at getting more $$$ Ever stopped to think he wants to give you a finish you will be happy with? Not everything is about $$$ and to be honest the extra cost in terms of labour for doing behind a vanity would be stuff all. So maybe listen to his advice without thinking he (or other tradesmen for that matter) are trying to rip you off. My tiler seems to think that everything should be tiled :s but is he just looking at getting more $$$ You would generally tile behind vanities, unless you're going to extend a mirror all the way to the benchtop, or have a glass splashback. You need some sort of splashback anyway; you can't just have a painted wall, or you'll be forever repainting. Upstairs or downstairs shouldn't make any difference. Re: Multi storey houses and tiling behind vanities 4Jun 12, 2011 9:03 pm BBB do you mean directly behind the vanity where it is installed? Talk to your cabinet maker and see what he prefers if you dont have any particular desire. We're not tiling behind our vanities - the tiler will come back to finish off around them once hubby installs so for the moment he has tiled everything else except left the vanity area. Re: Multi storey houses and tiling behind vanities 5Jun 13, 2011 9:14 am Ah...I'm with you now. Bam's obviously more on the ball than the rest of us. You wouldn't normally tile the area that the vanity cabinet covers (extra cost for no gain in terms of visual effect) - but it will be sealed with bathroom silicone along the edges to stop water getting behind the cabinetry. Re: Multi storey houses and tiling behind vanities 9Jun 13, 2011 3:39 pm Thanks everyone!!! Have decided to tile behind vanities as we are having huge mirrors which will be resting on tiles underneath. Rather than resting them on our wall hung vanities...
