Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jun 05, 2011 6:54 pm We are making final tile selection next week & have found some nice beige gloss 300mm x 300mm floor tiles. I've noticed however than most display homes have satin or matte floor tiles. Are gloss floor tiles okay for a bathroom? And is the size okay ie not too big for powder room & ensuite etc? Re: Gloss floor tiles & size 3Jun 06, 2011 8:50 am I bought gloss polished porcelain tiles for our floors in our bathrooms and laundry and didnt even think about the fact that they will be very slippery when wet. I had already spent the money though so we have to use them. We are having them installed this week and if they are too slippery there is something you can paint on them that makes them ok, not sure what it is though but im sure most tile places would be able to help. Ours are 300mm x 300mm and I think that is fine for a bathroom. Re: Gloss floor tiles & size 6Jun 06, 2011 9:19 am Im also tiling at the moment. Size shouldnt be an issue, Ive gone for 400 sqr and cut them all on diagonals and they look awesome. Mine are an off white matt finish and ive used the same tiles for walk in robes, ensuite, under stairwell, office and dining room. I have a 2o month and another due next week and slippery tiles were definitely a concern, not only when wet but also for kids in socks. I had a play with the tile I chose first though as I have found that matt finish doesnt always mean non slip. We have had an issue with tiles put down at my surf club and the council have had a number of goes in trying to make them safe. The last effort was to coat with a clear finish of some kind that contains sand and is supposed to make it non slip. It still isnt working. Best bet is to get some samples and test for yourself. Fyi, there is an addative for grout now that has probably been around for years but ive only just seen. It is a type of milky substance that takes the place of the water and seals it automatically. Its not overly cheap but will save me some work down the track. Not sure why it isnt used all the time if it is as good as they say!!!! May the force be with us Re: Gloss floor tiles & size 9Jul 03, 2011 9:32 am We have gloss ceramic 30x30 tiles in laundry and powder ... quite slippery (but I manage, very carefully)!!! I am guessing that polished porc will be around the same in terms of slipperiness My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Gloss floor tiles & size 10Jul 03, 2011 10:12 am I had to re- select the gloss tiles for the floor in the ensuite only because they were for the shower too! (which is a definite no-no unless I want to replace a hip) I kept the gloss for the floor but just changes the shower for the matt equiv. The shower is long enough for one end to stay relatively dry so don't plan to have wet feet when i step out of the shower. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All new built homes look like display homes... until the furniture goes in. Re: Gloss floor tiles & size 11Jul 03, 2011 7:53 pm We ended up changing our bathroom and laundry selection to a matte tile but I'm really happy with the and still got to keep a gloss porcelain tile in the living areas Re: Gloss floor tiles & size 13Jul 04, 2011 9:24 am Lex kdgirl, so it's polished porcelain that you're having in the living? Yes only for the living areas. They were just so much better in colour than the ceramic tiles we could select from. I'm really happy with the matte tiles we changed to in the laundry and bathrooms too. Re: Gloss floor tiles & size 14Jul 04, 2011 9:56 am We originally had "honed" tiles to our wet area floors as I was also concerned about how slippery they would be for our young children, DH really wanted the polished tiles. We were talked into using the polished porcelain on the floor by a few different people as "apparently" they are not as slippery as people assume. I also think they would be easier to clean & they do look nicer. I guess I can't talk from experience as we haven't lived with them yet, I do plan on using a suction mat in the kids shower though. If one of the kids breaks a bone from a fall it will be DH who takes them to the emergency room as he wanted polished floor tiles the most! I have a lot of downlights so I stayed away from glossy tiles. Too shiney for me. Re: Gloss floor tiles & size 16Jun 11, 2014 8:51 pm Testedbytime We are getting gloss floor tiles in our bathrooms. May the force be with us I dont think gloss tiles for the bathroom are that bad....because usually a floor mat will be in use right??? And you would dry your feet before walking around the bathroom?? maybe not for some... So depending on your habits,,,, i dont think the slip factor would be such an issue... Gloss tiles do look much cleaner than matt ones. Re: Gloss floor tiles & size 17Jun 13, 2014 7:27 pm This is my opinion and a few people that gave us advice before selections The reason display homes have Matt is because glossy show scratches and scratch a lot. We looked at a lot of display homes and could see all of the scratches on the display homes floors that had glossy tiles. Re: Gloss floor tiles & size 18Jun 19, 2014 2:41 pm You will find it impossible to scratch polished porcelain tiles. If you drag a file cabinet over them then yes it will scratch but so will matt finish tiles. Matt finish tiles are the worse tiles you can have indoors. They will trap all soils over the years and you will have no way of cleaning them except for calling a professional in. Most of the calls we get for tile cleaning a matt finish tiles. These tiles are made for outdoors only as the rain itself will keep them clean. If they are under cover outside you can hose them off to keep clean but indoors it is all over red rover. Polished porcelains or double glazed ceramics are not that slippery as one may think. 100 times easier to maintain that's for sure. Hi, planning on using the attached stone pieces in my bathroom.
