Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 May 25, 2011 4:15 pm Planning a bathroom reno that starts in July and was thinking of putting in one of those linear grate drains... Look a bit flasher than the standard 'hole in the middle' Anyway, anyone have one on their bathroom, have opinions on them? Pros/Cons? Also, if you have one, does it go full width up against the wall or is it inset a small amount (one of the sites I was looking at recommends setting it out 100mm from the wall and 50mm from each end).. Any info would be 'grate'..... ahh nothing like a pun Re: Shower - Grate Drains, opinions? 2May 25, 2011 6:43 pm We've got one to install in our new ensuite we are renovating. We bought 1800mm to run the length of the bath. I was told to go with the one that you can integrate tile into so it looks more like streamlined. The guy at the bathroom place said that if you buy the grates they can bend a little. I believe these are much easier to work tiles into than the standard hole in the floor. Pros and Cons...I couldnt tell you until we have it installed. They do look much better though Check out our renovation in progress at http://www.ourdiydream.com Follow us on facebook http://www.facebook.com/ourdiydream Check out what we are 'pinning' http://pinterest.com/ourdiydream/ Re: Shower - Grate Drains, opinions? 3May 25, 2011 8:10 pm We have one and I have no problems with it. I think it looks much better than the round drain. It certainly made tiling easier. Ours runs the length of the shower 1.5m and is flush against the wall. Hope that helps Donna Re: Shower - Grate Drains, opinions? 4May 25, 2011 9:43 pm Ours will be inset as your bathroom guy explained. I have seen it both ways. Re: Shower - Grate Drains, opinions? 7May 25, 2011 10:10 pm I've installed a couple of them. I had 100mm or so to the wall at each end for each of the installations. They looked great a had no ongoing problems. 1 of them was set into a cement screed base. The other into one of the precast fiberglass basses. Both came up very nice. Re: Shower - Grate Drains, opinions? 8May 25, 2011 10:53 pm I've got Stormtech linear grates. The go from wall to wall and are butted up against the wall. that is, no gap between the grate and the walls. Looks great. Have had them for 5 months now and don;t see how they would be a cleaning issue. They look great and they allowed me to have a flat plane for the tiles. I had the tiles going to a round drain, particularly when they split a tile! Thinking just going the narrow 55mm version in the shower as its not a huge bathroom... 800mm wide for sitting along the 900mm side... Re: Shower - Grate Drains, opinions? 11May 26, 2011 2:49 pm We've got a Stormtech one across the shower in our ensuite. It's wall to wall so I think we got a 1500mm one which was trimmed to fit the 1400mm area. It looks great! What do you use to lift up the grate and what happens to hair, does it go down the drain or does it tend to get caught in the grate? I have long hair and can't avoid losing it whilst showering but I don't want to have a blocked drain as a result of it. Re: Shower - Grate Drains, opinions? 12May 26, 2011 3:41 pm ^ You order the Stormtech grates to length. I lift them by putting a couple of table knives between the bars, twisting and lifting. I'm sure there are better methods. You may get hair on the grate, but it's easy to clean from above with the grate in place by just wiiping. Re: Shower - Grate Drains, opinions? 18Jun 22, 2011 10:55 am What is the actual term for this type of grate? Re: Shower - Grate Drains, opinions? 19Jun 23, 2011 10:48 am I have a stainless steel linear grate that extends along the shower area. I cannot tell you how much I love that thing! It would probably be the best bathroom purchase I made. It was a bit of an investment but it really is awesome. No problem cleaning it, the grate just lifts out and you clean the catchment area. I have long hair so sometimes it gets caught in the grate but I just use a hose to hose it off. I've only had to do that twice in two years so it's very low maintenance and it really does look grate (pun intended!). I also have one of those hidden tile thingys for the other waste in the bathroom. It also looks really good, especially if you have a modern bathroom. 2fk Re: Shower - Grate Drains, opinions? 20Jun 25, 2011 12:12 am SBOB Thanks for the info...
