I hven't noticed this when I've seen them in display homes but my builder is telling me it needs that. A good tiler will ensure the finished floor level is flush with the top of the aluminium, and you'll never see it. Should also be a piece at each door way. Thanks for yoir input Yes it absolutely does, otherwise you can end up with water travelling under the tiles (tiles/grout are porous) and ending up anywhere... it's called 'waterstop'.
