The tiles can be cut to fit and then they'll caulk neatly around the edge to seal it. bath - tile then bath or tile around bath? 6May 20, 2011 7:28 am Mrs P Looking at my baths, there is such a small lip now because the tiles are around it, doesn't look very good, really wishing I went with a free standing bath now I really think you need a lot of room around a free standing bath Mrs P. Cleaning would be a nightmare otherwise. My second bathroom is like yours (photo later) and I've never thought it looked odd. Cheer up, I can tell you're not happy but wait till you get your shutters etc. I think you'll be surprised Re: bath - tile then bath or tile around bath? 8May 20, 2011 1:38 pm I don’t know if this is the right or wrong way to go about it but what my builder did is set the bath in the hob frame at such a precise height that there was just enough room below the “lip” of the bath for the tiler to continue the tiles under for a seamless finish. I don’t know if this was planned or a fluke but I was certainly impressed. Oh I might add that the reason the lip was sticking out was because the underside of the bath was resting on two timber struts whereas typically I think the bath is set so that the lip is resting on the frame and then the underside of the bath is supported with timber or bricks. Mrs P has your bath been siliconed yet or are you jumping the gun? Once siliconed it should look much more visually appealing as the tile cuts should not be visible provided they are neat and close to the bath. Re: bath - tile then bath or tile around bath? 9May 22, 2011 3:17 pm As professional Bathroom Builder and Designer the bath is normall set on the timber framing. Before this the bath has to be sittting on a bed of mortar mix fully supporting the acrylic bath, (some do it with Expandable foam) a steel bath hangs on the frame. After the bath has been correctly installed the timber frame is lined with 6mm villaboard. Then a urethane sealant joint locking the villaboard to the bath. Waterproof membraned locking the membrane over the uerthane onto the bath. This will eliminate all water penetration to the frame. It is the tiled with a further silicone joint between the bath and tiles. After building over 2000 bathrooms one gets to know what is right and what is wrong.
