Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Apr 12, 2011 9:34 pm Can anyone tell me what the grout width should be on my porcelain rectified bathroom floor tiles? My builder is saying that they cannot be closer than they have done them (about 3-4mm) due to the fall needed to floor waste. I am not happy because I expected not too see very much grout at all. Also with mitruing should the tiles be almost touching? Any advice would be much appreciated. Re: Grout Width 2Apr 13, 2011 1:09 am I believe that sounds about right. My understanding from speaking to tilers is that the absolute smallest grout width that can be done is 2mm, but even that is not often recommended as there may not be enough grout to hold the tiles in place. Also as your builder says, if you have larger floor tiles in a small area such as a bathroom they would need to allow for fall, which would mean taking into account at least 2mm of grout width at the bottom of the tile, which could be 3-4mm at the top of the tile. So 3-4mm sounds like a reasonable width to me. Mitring would generally be done to the same width as the other grouting, both for reason of needing enough grout to hold it in place, and also to keep a uniform look across the bathroom. Re: Grout Width 4Apr 13, 2011 9:59 am I've put porcelains throughout the entire house floors and they all have a thinner grout. The tiler tried telling me that they can't do it but then he came clean and just said it is more time consuming and he did the same thing in his house.. I've never seen porcelains laid with a thicker grout Re: Grout Width 5Apr 13, 2011 12:47 pm I have large procelain tiles with 1.5 mm spacing. Looks great. (I don't have a fall issue since I have linear grates, excpet for one ciruclar one near a wall and the tiles are still in one plane.) We insisted we wanted 600 x 600 floor tiles in the shower floor but the only options were to 1. have a shower grate so the fall is along the edge of the shower, or 2. cut the tiles down so they could fall to a central waste. they didn't mention the grout lines would need to be larger though. http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i80/danielt25/New%20House/IMG_9942.jpg Our "Better Homes Queensland" Cairns Build viewtopic.php?f=31&t=40451 Current stage - 1st builder's clean done. Re: Grout Width 7Apr 16, 2011 11:07 pm We had the meeting and it was explained that due to the fall to the floor waste the gaps had to be the size they were so it was consistent throughout the bathroom otherwise we would have had narrower gaps everywhere except around the drain, which would look weird. I guess we have to be happy with that. the tiles are dark grey but are covered in dust at the moment so hopefully once they are cleaned and I seal the grout it should look much better.
