Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Apr 08, 2011 7:37 am Hi everyone, I'm a new member & would like some advice on tile selection for a bathroom renovation. I'm thinking about using 300x600 wall tiles(laid vertically), & 200x200 floor tiles. Do people think that it will look strange that the grout lines don't line up? Alternatively I can use a 200x400 wall tile but prefer the look of the larger ones. I am using 200x200 floor tiles as the tiler says it is easier to get the fall in the shower this way. The bathroom is relatively small(1.8x2.6). I would love any help or advice. Re: Advice on tile size 2Apr 08, 2011 9:25 am Very often with matching-sized tiles the tilers don't line up the grout lines anyway so I wouldn't count on that happening unless you specify that you want it very clearly. I would try to get a 300x300 floor tile with 300x600 wall tiles, with a smaller floor tile I reckon your attention will be drawn to the floor, away from the nice big wall tiles. At our tile shop we were told that above 300x300 it is hard to get the fall you want in the shower without cutting the tiles and it can look bad unless you get an expert tiler. She said the other option was to go larger tiles for the main floor and a smaller tile just in the shower area. Our main bathroom is similar dimension to your room. We went with 300x300 floor tiles and 100x300 wall tiles (laid vertically) and I think it looks great. Our tiler put the floor tiles on the diagonal in the shower recesses so they aren't the same as the rest of the room. Re: Advice on tile size 4Apr 08, 2011 10:48 am No - I don't have a photo, sorry. I realised after I posted that it probably wasn't much use without a photo. Last time I was in the house I tried to take a picture but the size/shape of the room made it really tricky so I didn't bother in the end. We won't get another chance to go into the house for another few weeks either. Re: Advice on tile size 5Apr 08, 2011 11:13 am We are doing 300x600 wall & 300x300 floor, I think any smaller and it would look odd. As for grout lines lining up, ours in this house are the exact same tile and line up perfectly, in the new house they aren't and I have asked the tiler to offset the wall and floor tiles so some don't line up then it obviously starts getting worse. Re: Advice on tile size 6Apr 08, 2011 3:29 pm Don't forget in some states you have a central waste point as well as in the shower. So you will have two falls to deal with. Our tiler asked us to stay with 20x20 tiles on the floor for this reason - which we were happy to do. We have 20x40 on the wall and the 20x20 on the floor. They don't match up on every wall - but seriously you don't notice it at all since we have a freestanding tub in the middle of the room so you eye is drawn to it not the tile grout lines. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Advice on tile size 8Apr 08, 2011 3:59 pm We have the same size tiles in 4 bathrooms, the laundry and 2 powder rooms - so personally I don't think they look dated at all. Re: Advice on tile size 10Apr 10, 2011 10:56 am we are putting our 600 x 600 tiles on the floor and walls. having mentioned the alignment of the grout lines, i think they probably do look better lined up but i think if you were not specifically looking for that, then you wouldn't really notice it. by using big tiles this meant we needed a shower waste grate ($1200 for two showers) because it was impossible for the tiler to use big tiles (without cutting them) to create a fall with a normal square waste. the tiler appears to be lining up the grout lines from the floor to the walls http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i80/danielt25/New%20House/IMG_9838.jpg Our "Better Homes Queensland" Cairns Build viewtopic.php?f=31&t=40451 Current stage - 1st builder's clean done.
