Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Mar 29, 2011 8:08 pm As part of a major reno, we are planning a new bathroom in a space 3.5x2.3m. Along the 3.5m wall (opp the door) is a bath and frameless shower. Presently there is a gap of approx 700mm between the end of the bath and the shower. I really love the look of the bath surround "intruding" into the shower to form a shelf. We plan to do a bright feature mosaic around the bath, so want this to be the feature. My question is - is 3.5m too wide to do this? Our shower is currently 1200x900, and i haven't seen bigger (and want to avoid custom design costs if possible). Baths seem to be around 1500mm. Suspecting 350mm each side of the bath extra will probably look a liitle weird. Would appreciate any thoughts and advice. Re: Advice needed on bath and shower sizes 2Mar 31, 2011 8:48 am Just go for a tiled base rather than a pre made one. It shouldn't cost much more and you can have any size you want. Out new shower will be 920x2000 with 2 shower heads. Also adding a small ledge at one end about 4-500mm up for GLW to use as a rest for leg shaving. I plan on using it as a headrest for when I've 1 (read as 8 or 9) too many drinks. I should be able to rest my head on it and be pummeled with cold water until I feel like a human again. As for the bath, neither GLW or I are particularly small people so she just jumped in a bunch at the showrooms until she found one that was comfortable to lay in. Trying to get the kid into showers asap, but she like baths in a big plastic tub at the minute so water use is lower anyway. Re: Advice needed on bath and shower sizes 3Mar 31, 2011 10:22 pm Thanks for the advice - sounds like you have your bath sorted to suit every situation! Was planning to go for a tiled base, but it seems the frameless shower screens only come in set sizes... perhaps not? Re: Advice needed on bath and shower sizes 4May 22, 2011 2:43 pm As a professional Bathroom Builder, Designer, Bathroom Building Inspector, I will give you some tips, I have done over 2000 (Yes two thousand) bathrooms and still going. Imagine changing to a 1800mm bath, 1200 tiled shower leaving 500mm. This space is as what we call a hob and is the distance between the shower and bath. It can be constructed in timber with villaboard, and offcourse waterproofed with a membrane or made in blockwork. I would keep this as the same height as the frame around the bath. The width of the bath is approx: 760mm add 55mm as a front bath frame but extend the nib hob out past the bath to make the shower size 1200mm W x approx: 1000mm D. Only extend the hob out (500mm W) to make the shower 1000mm. The frame making up the front of the bath will only jot out approx 55mm. All surfaces are tiled with perhaps chrome tile trim to the edges of the hob and front of the bath frame. The shower screen must be located on top of the hob and to the inside of the shower and the shower glass door will meet up with that. Don't buy a ready made shower screen as it will not work. For all these situations all screens are custom made, measured, and installed AFTER the tiling is complete. The look will have a wow factor especially when walking through the door and see this in front of you. Obviously the vanity unit and mirror are on the left or right wall. I am actually writing a book "DIY Bathroom Renovations" for people like you but won't be published untill the end of the year. If you need any further advice I have plenty. Hope this will get you motivated. We in our business have a slogan "Making Bathrooms Look Beautiful" yours will be the same. Cheers, Richard Re: Advice needed on bath and shower sizes 5May 23, 2011 4:09 pm Bathroom Doctor - that is precisely the option we've gone for and I'm so thankful for your post, as I was a little worried our bath was taking up the whole space (See my thread "Attack of the Killer Bath"). We've gone with a 1800x800 bath, with hob extending 300mm either end, and 70mm either side. That way the bath is centred. The hob then "protudes" into the shower space another 100mm which we'll use as a shelf. Shower is 1200x940mm. Though if I understand your advice, do you think we should keep as 900mm with the mosiac exposed 40mm on the outside of the shower? Problem is we are planning to have the door open from the other end, so not sure how that will look (?) I'm tiling the whole hob a bright green mosaic, so will be the feature of the bathroom. Hope I've understood your advice correctly, thanks again. Spoke to a shower screen installer, and its not too expensive to have the 940mm side cut to sit on the hob, with a dog-leg cut to the 1200 pane with door to accomodate the hob. Feeling better about my decisions now... Here's the link to the other thread with a diagram, which should hopefully make more sense... http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=47783 You need to reference the manufactures installation guide, your supplier may have strengthened the base where it is not required to sit on a bed. 1 1805 OK it's been a little while!
