Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Mar 21, 2011 9:25 am Hi all We had our tiles appt at Beaumont Tiles on Saturday. I am going for the feature mosaic tiles above vanity in both the bathrooms. I signed the papers. When I came home I realised that the tile lady had doubled the number of feature tiles required in each bathroom. For eg. the distance between my vanity benchtop and vanity mirror is 150mm. And the feature tiles we selected come in 300x300mm sheet. So I was under the impression that for an area of 900mm, I can get away with 1.5 or max 2 sheets. But she has charged me for 4 sheets. When I rang her this morning, she said that I have to consider the tile wastage as well if the tiler breaks the tile during laying. Why should I have to pay extra if their tiler breaks the tile? Shouldnt they take care of it within themselves? Is this doubling of number of tiles really justified?? Is it normal for them to do this? Thanks Re: Feature tile wastage 'allowance' 2Mar 21, 2011 10:12 am Because tiles break. There is no way to stop it and if you only got th etiles to cover the area without breakage one of two things would happen. The Tiler would do as much as he could and then wait for you to supply more or just leave it not finished or They wouldn't do the job at all. Tiles need to be cut quite often and the y break other times they just arrive broken. Feature tiles/mosaic/specialty tiles that are sold on a sheet are often sold as not to be cut. We had the same thing with the ones we chose. They said they try not damage them and use 1/3rd sheets but they said no way they'll get 3 out of 1 sheet so we have to pay for the others and it'll either get credited or we keep the left over. Re: Feature tile wastage 'allowance' 3Mar 21, 2011 10:13 am By the way, for regular tiles you normally have a 5-10% allowance for breakage. Also the bigger the tile the more allowance I think Re: Feature tile wastage 'allowance' 4Mar 21, 2011 10:17 am Thanks chris&kate. yeah, I guess I was just a bit 'over-concerned' about the doubling up the tiles. I can probably use the left over tiles ( if any) for some other feature after handover.. Thanks Re: Feature tile wastage 'allowance' 5Mar 21, 2011 12:32 pm We paid for more also, but the leftoves are left in the property and we were told they must stay there, because if ever there is a crack or they need replacing, you don't have to source the same tile.
