Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Mar 12, 2011 12:15 pm We're awaiting certification for our build so one last rethink as we're able to change internals before we sign off on the final construction/frame is ordered. What would you go with per current, option A, option B and why ? http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/9123/powderlaundry.jpg I've also added the bigger picture in terms of impact to the kitchen meals area with option B. Look forward to some feedback and then we can really get building ! Re: Help on deciding: separate or combined shower/laundry 2Mar 12, 2011 12:23 pm umm, I like the current version! sorry! I guess I don't understand why you want to knock down the wall? is this a new build? or do you mean current as in the plans currently show it this way? would option a/current or option b give you less kitchen room? Re: Help on deciding: separate or combined shower/laundry 4Mar 12, 2011 12:41 pm donuts umm, I like the current version! sorry! The laundry is the only room with no window, so we're just considering having it part of the powder/shower which also means light to the laundry and better ventilation. Option B makes the kitchen more open - so trade offs have to be made ! Re: Help on deciding: separate or combined shower/laundry 5Mar 12, 2011 12:47 pm aaah ok I get it now... I still think I'd prefer the closed-off laundry option, I think I'd get annoyed having the washing machine and/or dryer on while I was in the shower although ppl have their WM in kitchens in the UK so I guess it isn't that strange. and I'm not in my laundry enough to be worried about whether there is a window there. You could put a skylight in the laundry if it is natural light you are after? either way I'd make sure there was some good ventilation for the laundry ,... even if you have it part of the bathroom I would think you'd need ventilation near the laundry equipment also. Option B gives you that extra cupboard and makes the kitchen more open... so if it was just out of A or B I think I'd choose B "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. Re: Help on deciding: separate or combined shower/laundry 6Mar 12, 2011 1:56 pm Could you switch them around & have the laundry with the window and make the bathroom without and just have a fan. I've never really seen laundrys without ventilation whereas many people have bathrooms without windows Re: Help on deciding: separate or combined shower/laundry 7Mar 12, 2011 4:04 pm donuts aaah ok I get it now... Our focus was more on ventilation/free air flow to avoid musty/mouldy conditions. That said we found using vinegar instead of softner in our front loader has helped that issue. Re: Help on deciding: separate or combined shower/laundry 8Mar 12, 2011 4:13 pm Mrs P Could you switch them around & have the laundry with the window and make the bathroom without and just have a fan. I've never really seen laundrys without ventilation whereas many people have bathrooms without windows Our current place has no window in the powder and adjoining laundry and yes, most builder designs have the powder room without a window and the laundry with a the window. The original design was like this but as we made the powder larger to cater for the shower, we thought the shower would be better off with the window (it will have a fan too) and switched it around. In our place/usage, the ground floor toilet is the busiest room (3 girls) so we thought that would work best as well. The recent discovery of a musty smell from the front loader made us rethink this to at least open it up so we could get airflow from the window to the shower and front loader. But using vinegar instead of softner is giving us hope to control that situation. If we do option B then its more $$$'s to sort out the kitchen ! Re: Help on deciding: separate or combined shower/laundry 9Mar 12, 2011 4:17 pm I would go opt B and make your pantry a bit bigger..... In the house we are going to build we are having a combined laundry/bathroom to allow more room in bathroom. Having the laundry up against one wall and enclose it with cupboards/sliding doors so you can't see it.... this way we can have more room in the bathroom, can't wait!!!! Re: Help on deciding: separate or combined shower/laundry 10Mar 12, 2011 5:41 pm mapcalla I would go opt B and make your pantry a bit bigger..... Not sure if you've got the linen cupboard mixed up with the pantry ? The pantry is a corner unit 1x1 m which is plenty for us. So if we go option B, we will put more cupboards and counterspace of 1.7m. Another option with the kitchen straightened, we could put the fridge in the corner, move the pantry to the end of the wall counter (this is the original position) but it will be smaller and then lengthen the island by 600 mm (the depth of the wall space gained). Thoughts ? EDIT: Here's 2 mockups of possible kitchen changes: Kitchen B1 http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/7642/powderlaundry2.jpg Kitchen B2 http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/9282/powderlaundry3.jpg Re: Help on deciding: separate or combined shower/laundry 11Mar 12, 2011 6:20 pm jklow888 mapcalla I would go opt B and make your pantry a bit bigger..... Yes was thinking of pantry - I was looking at option B with Kitchen plan.... by doing option B laundry you would be able to increase the size of your pantry. Just had another look at your option B - instead of a separate cupboard for linen... why not incorporate it with sliding doors in front of your washing machine etc to cover them up. You might be able to have a small broom/storage cupboard as well..... You might be able to have a small broom/storage cupboard as well..... In a previous apt, we had concertina type doors to hide the laundry/allows you to open them up for ventilation but the doors would end on the butt ends of each wall. To achieve this are you also suggesting the door to the powder/laundry area be flush with the passage wall ? We're having a hard time visualizing how to lay this out as sliding doors have to retract into a wall cavity or are you suggesting this is a cabinet type wall/door and not a stud wall/real doors ? Re: Help on deciding: separate or combined shower/laundry 13Mar 12, 2011 7:37 pm Current version for me. I would prefer a separate Laundry. You can shut the door and make the dirty laundry (clothing) disappear, well for a little while anyway. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Help on deciding: separate or combined shower/laundry 14Mar 12, 2011 9:37 pm jklow888 mapcalla Just had another look at your option B - instead of a separate cupboard for linen... why not incorporate it with sliding doors in front of your washing machine etc to cover them up. Uploaded with ImageShack.us The pics a bit small but I think I can see your idea. For this to work properly, the doors would have to be on a slider from above in order to move a washing machine in/adjust/move it out for maitenance/cleaning behind it. It does look and would probably feel narrow. I guess with mirrored doors it would help with light and make it feel spacious. Re: Help on deciding: separate or combined shower/laundry 17Mar 13, 2011 12:01 am I would prefer a separate laundry too, but extra space in the kitchen is also good. So what about having option B space, but keeping current layout ie. laundry in line with powder room, keep wall between powder room and laundry, but get rid of wall/door into laundry - not sure if that made sense! and then if mustiness is an issue, you can open the door to the bathroom and also the bathroom window?
