Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Feb 23, 2011 3:05 pm Hi, We are thinking about renovating our very small bathroom soon. We currently have a small size bath with a shower beside it. I'm thinking of putting a full length bath in with a shower head over the bath. Is this a bad idea for resale? A lot of people have told me they don't like showers over baths becasue they are hard to get in and out of. So what do you think? It doesn't bother me, but we are selling in the next 5 yrs. So is a small bath and seperate shower better? Thanks Re: shower over bath bad idea? 2Feb 23, 2011 4:18 pm I currently live in a rented flat with shower in the bath tub. The bathtub frequently accumulates scum around the middle rim. I try to remove the scum (with steel wool & domestos) at least once a month to prevent build up. Re: shower over bath bad idea? 3Feb 23, 2011 5:20 pm Quite a few bathroom designs have an open shower beside the bath - it looks more spacious than having a screened shower there but requires a bit of effort to slope the floor for drainage so the bathroom installers may try to discourage you. Re: shower over bath bad idea? 4Feb 26, 2011 11:15 pm we had same problem on our last reno so we opted to put shower in full size tub the problem we had was water running down between bath and wall no matter how much we sealed it. also had little room to dry off it was a real pain so we took bath out and just had a normal 900 shower put in. our house sold to investors so it wasnt an issue not having a bath we had plenty of room to move and made the room look twice as big we also opted for a corner vanity i missed not having my baths but got used to it stay safe happy building Re: shower over bath bad idea? 5Jun 22, 2011 11:46 am We renovated our bathroom 2 years ago and have a shower over the bath. we are now looking at ripping the bath out and just having a shower. the bath gets used probably 1-2 times a month and this is only when people have sore backs or limbs from a hard days work so I am thinking of putting an outdoor spa on the deck. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There's no use being a damn fool about it. W.C. Fields Brought Established. Re: shower over bath bad idea? 6Jun 22, 2011 2:22 pm I would be dubious about the re-sale merits of removeing bath completely if you are selling a house - as oppossed to a unit or an apartment - for the family market, I think many people want baths when they have small children. Therefore I would do shower over bath - not ideal, better to have separate shower, but if that is all space allows, so be it. Or your current set-up - small bath with separate shower - for small kids, most people need a bath - but it doesnt have to be a big one. If you have a property that is not likely to be sold at the family market - ie a 2 bedroom unit more suitable for couples or retirees, then better to have a shower only - especially if retirees are potential buyers, they are ones most likely to have problems getting in/out of baths. Re: shower over bath bad idea? 7Jul 03, 2011 12:29 am we are doing a shower over bath in the main bathroom and just a shower in the ensuite in our next house - I hate having to clean both (we have 2x showers and 2x baths in our current house) it will be mostly the kids using the main bathroom and they much prefer baths anyway and I think I will find having a hand shower useful to rinse their hair and stuff. there would however be enough space to put a separate shower in later (if you modified the vanity) Re: shower over bath bad idea? 8Jul 03, 2011 1:54 pm For resale most people would hold onto the bath, also if you have small children as they dont tend to like a shower. A bigger bath with an adjustable showerhead is good so you can rinse your hair in the bath. A handle on the wall as a saftey issue really helps if people are old or have back issues. Our family bath has a saftey handle for when my Dad comes to stay. hes 78 and still likes a bath. Walls only leak if the waterproofing has not been done properly. Keep it streamlined in looks and it will look a lot bigger than it is Re: shower over bath bad idea? 9Jul 04, 2011 12:21 pm My first post! It really does depend what you want for your place and if you sell it, who are the potential buyers going to be.We are currently in the process of planning our bathroom renovations. We have a small bathroom and already have a bath/ shower combined. We briefly considered the idea of seperating the two but space-wise and cleaning-wise it was too much. We have small children and our house, should we sell, would most likely go to first homeowners and therefore having a bath is pretty important IMO.
