Re: Removing soap scum build-up 44Feb 21, 2011 3:17 pm I've been using gel for years and recently asked hubby if he'd mind if he used gel too for this exact reason. He informed me he much preferred gels and only used soap cause it was cheaper! Has been nice not seeing any soap scum lately. Good luck getting rid of yours, will be interested to see what ends up working. Best Answer - Chosen by Asker What you are seeing may not be soap scum. You may be dealing with hard water stains. Try vinegar first. You'll want to let it soak for awhile. Commercial products fall into two categories: Abrasives and chemicals. Abrasives like Barkeepers Friend and Ajax are effective but might leave scratches in the tile and glass. Test in an inconspicuous spot before using. Chemicals like CLR and Lime-away can be effective, but make sure you use adequate ventilation and gloves. We had a horrible hard-water problem in our shower and tried dozens of products before settling on Bring-it-on cleaner, which combines a mild abrasive and gentle chemical bleach. Details at http://www.BringItOnCleaner.com. Asker's Comment: turns out it was hard water!-hence why trying to rinse it with water wasnt helping!! Vinegar worked like an absolute dream-who'd have thought?! will try the bringiton cleaner as well. thankyou Could it be something like this? ALDI cleaner There is only one way to remove your stain and as this is not soap scum it is hard water calcium deposits as the water is not draining that well and just sits there and the water will evapourate but than leaves hard water deposits just like your shower glass. You will need phosforic acid mix 50/50 scrub with pad than rinse all gone. Also having darker tiles in a wet area will show it more Yes vinega can work but you will need something with more kick like phos acid. Craig Re: Removing soap scum build-up 51Feb 21, 2011 6:33 pm thankyou so much karry327 ! awesome info. Will give the vinegar a go again - this time leave it on the surface much longer. GroutPerfect, I think I'll give the vinegar another go, before resorting to acid and thanks guys for taking the time to look into it & replying So in summary, I will try the : * vinegar again. If that doesn't help, I'll try * the CLR. After that.......we'll see Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Removing soap scum build-up 52Feb 21, 2011 7:08 pm I have used those magic erasers melcur. Ive used them extensively on similar problems dealing with hard water staining. Send me a PM if you want his details. Re: Removing soap scum build-up 58Feb 24, 2011 1:24 pm Have you had any luck Southies removing those marks??? I was speaking to a sales rep for a tile place & she recommended using steel wool with gentle pressure & a mild cleaning agent, just make sure surface is wet or else it will leave scratch marks ( be sure to sweep up/clean up any metal filings as they will eventually leave rust marks). Also she told me Enduro Shield has released a tile & grout sealer!! Works like the one for glass, water beads off tiles - no marks left. I have just applied Enduro shield for glass last weekend (after scrubbing shower screen spotless) & so far so good. Very easy to apply. (available at some glass retailers, NOT bunnings) Enduro Shield website has distributor details in your area, just need to put in your postcode, also has video instructions for all product applications. Scrubbed it with a scrubbing brush, rinsed it off all as per instructions & . Nothing has changed I am at my wit's end . I'm worried that I may have scratched the tile surface when I used the scourer way back when this all started and that's why I can't get the tiles clean. PS I tried vinegar again prior to using the CLR & of course no luck with that. I'm stumped Edit : Cooper32 I've applied Glassshield on my glass shower recesses & it's great stuff. I presume it's similar to Enduroshield Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Removing soap scum build-up 60Feb 24, 2011 3:27 pm I do not think you have scratched the tiles Southies very hard to do with a scrubbing pad on porcelains but marble tiles will though. You need to go to a cleaning supply shop ask for phosforic acid it is very safe to use as we use it everyday for restoring customers showers if they try and sell you something else tell them NO I want phosphoric acid. I promise this will remove your stains. Remember dwell time is very important here tape up your drain hole first scrub with a white scourer pad rinse all gone. In saying that we have had showers that would not respond to any thing we had used due to the poor quality of the tile, meaning cheap kaolin in the clay being used by the manufactures, this creates maintenance issues as some stains go into the tile and will never remove. I hope you can fix this, if not you should give a professional tile cleaner a call. I know of a good in Quakers Hill send me an email if you would like his details. Also if you are having trouble finding this product let me know and I can mail it to you.
