Tiles of the same size but a different colour may work as a feature. Other things I think are quite timeless are: -stone (especially white marble or travertine - or there are some very good porcelain versions available now) - plain coloured mosaics (ceramic or glass) I am very dubious about vanity basins, too. Many of the vessel basins are looking pretty dated to me - even though I like them. 'Old fashioned' built in or undermount sinks are still found in top-end homes. That's a fantastic result!
