Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jan 29, 2011 8:44 am Hi The drain in the middle of our ensuite seems to be blocked up and smells. When investigating I note that the water from the sink also runs into this drain. Can someone confirm please if the toilet will also connect through this drain o will the toilet waste have its own outlet. The reason I ama asking is I want to try and remove all the blockage and clean, but do not want to do this if the toilet waste is in there, as the job might get a bit messy. Is there also a recommended chemical that can be bought to assist in cleaning drainage pipes/drains. Thanks for any help assistance. D Re: Ensuite Drain Blocking 2Jan 29, 2011 8:50 am Toilet waste should have it's own outlet pipe. But it will connect to the same drain at some point. There is a drain cleaning chemical called Momar which can be bought at Reece or Tradelink or places like that. You need to be very careful using it as it's a very highly concentrated acid. I'd strongly suggest exploring all other options before using Momar... Perhaps call a plumber and get them to investigate and use a drain cleaning machine. Without getting a plumber to put a camera down, it would be difficult to confirm where the toilet connects to the same drain... Re: Ensuite Drain Blocking 4Jan 29, 2011 8:58 am DJVaughan Thanks for the help. Can I assume though that the toilet will not connect directly to this drain in the bathroom and it connects somewhere else? D Re: Ensuite Drain Blocking 5Jan 29, 2011 8:59 am The first question is: Is it actually blocked or does it just smell. If it only smells the problem is that the water trap (which keeps out the smells from the other drains and toilet) has dried up which stops it working. When you have a floor drain you ned to keep pouring some water in it regularly preferably with a bit of bleach. If it is blocked the first step is either some unblocking caustic solution which you can get from most DIY stores (Make sure you follow the safety instructions as these are pretty aggresive chemicals). Alternativly you can buy a plunger which is like a big suction cup thing. you put this over the drain and press down vigerously two or three times. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Ensuite Drain Blocking 6Jan 29, 2011 9:19 am Hi Bash It is not actually blocked as water still flows. When I lift the grate off the drain in the middle of the floor I can see a lot of built up mess which looks like sewage and smells like sewage but I a m hoping that it is just a build up of dirt over the years ( we have recently bought the house). I am hoping that as I have now been told that the toilet should not be connected, I can remove the waste and I think the drain is only a foot or so deep looking at the other drains in the main bathroom so if cleaned this might cure the problem. I don't think anything has dried up, as like I have explained there is water/waste in there. When I run the tap in the sink water flows into the drain (above the visible waste) and then drains away down a small outlet pipe. Hopefully!!! Re: Ensuite Drain Blocking 8Jan 30, 2011 3:31 pm the toilet will not run into the floor waste. Floor wastes smell if water is not run down them often. Bleech is a good thing to tip down there to try and clean. you can put drain cleaner down there if you want it should do the same thing. As mentioned above be very careful with this stuff as same brands will eat the top off your tiles if you spill it on them. Re: Ensuite Drain Blocking 9Feb 05, 2011 8:21 pm I have found the best way to clean centre drains and shower drains is to use a round toilet brush , buy a cheap round brush from ikea, remove the grate ,make sure the drain is wet and brush away, then rinse with hose or bucket, works a treat provided the drain is not to deep. May need some shower cleaner or mould spray to break up the filth. There is an s bend at the bottom of the drain which will then branch off to the 100mm toilet pipe, so shouldnt have any sewage in drain. Re: Ensuite Drain Blocking 10Feb 09, 2011 6:31 am Go and see a plumbing store about a gratemate or grateseal (or drainseal, something like that). Its an item that you insert into the waste pipe that stops the smells and foam coming back up. Possumchops Now the proud owner of 3.7acres of Serenity. Colour selection completed!
