Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jan 16, 2011 4:40 pm I am planning a new home and wonder if using imported taps in a new house would cause any real trouble with any certificates, regulations, codes? I think I understand things like differences in pressure, access to spare parts etc etc. Cost is not a factor for this consideration. Any insight here would be much appreciated as we do not know this area at all. The "bridge" (the gap between where the hot and cold taps come out the wall) had to be shortened. Australian Standards are different to EU. 2. The diameter of the tap is less as well (35mm v 30mm from memory- had to buy a reducer) 3. Wasnt build for hard water (Adelaide), one (critical) screw in particular failed. 4. Spare parts not available. Brand not imported to Oz, so I couldnt get that critical screw. On the upside, the thermostatic bar tap didnt cost that much (try to buy the "imported" equivalent in Australia.....$1100.) so, in summary - check tap diameters, availability of spares and you CAN do it. Personally, I wouldnt try again - unless you really love that tap ! (then just buy 2 and use the other one for spares ) Why are priates scary ? Because they yaargh.. Re: Use of imported taps - certificates, regulations, codes? 3Jan 16, 2011 7:35 pm if they dont have aust standards on them your plumber shouldn't install them. If they blow out leak or what ever you will get no insurance cover. Hope this helps. Re: Use of imported taps - certificates, regulations, codes? 4Jan 16, 2011 9:51 pm What happens if you import a tap that is identical to an Australian available tap from a major brand? Actually most European brands, such as Hansgrohe, Hansa and Grohe, now have the cartridge portion separate from the tap, so it would be simple to get the internals locally, and the external, some which are not yet imported to Australia, from OS. Re: Use of imported taps - certificates, regulations, codes? 5Jan 16, 2011 10:19 pm i will ring the Plumbing industry tomorrow and ask the question for you Re: Use of imported taps - certificates, regulations, codes? 6Jan 20, 2011 12:48 am Captain Morgan I had a thermostatic bar tap in my shower from europe... My experience so far has been to use a thermostatic tap over the bathtub with hand shower. Did not have any problems, has worked great so far and is top quality. It has an adjustable water flow control so it can be easily pre-set to limit the water flow as much as one wants. The bridge distance range the tap supports is quite large from 105 mm to 225mm. The pipe thread is exactly the same as here (seems all these go back to a British standard) and there was no problem just screwing it on the (very old) female pipe ends coming out of the wall. So in my case, it was a very simple yet a great 'renovation' option for our old bathroom where I could not find anything on the local market that would provide us with any options. The model we used was: TOTO TMHG40CCR shown here with specification: http://www.toto.co.jp/products/faucet/s02_1.htm (3rd row of taps from the bottom, 1st from left). This page shows retail prices but we have not paid anything as much as that.
