Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jan 12, 2011 5:12 pm I read a thread on here where someone advised that the best taps are All Brass Construction because, unlike All Metal Construction taps with zinc in them, they won't pit through the chrome in a few years. I've looked at the websites for Methven and Phoenix they don't mention being 'All Brass', and they're quite expensive taps with, in Methven's case, a 15 year warranty. However, I've seen cheapo $60 taps on Ebay that claim to be All Brass Construction. So which is better? I've been living with leaky, crappy taps for years so I want to replace them with something that will last. I'm prepared to pay for a Methven or Phoenix but not if the finish is going to deteriorate because they're not 'All Brass'. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you! Re: Taps - all brass construction question 2Jan 13, 2011 9:56 pm I dont know. But we ordered Methven due to the warranty and their satinjet, and then chose their mixers because they were luuurvely and we couldnt find anything to compare. Re: Taps - all brass construction question 5Feb 21, 2011 6:03 pm Hi Blueblueblue, I've just sent you a PM about my recent Methven shower purchase as not sure if I'm allowed to include all the details here. On the subject of all brass taps, I've been given conflicting advice from people in bathroom shops. One guy said 'I think all taps are made of brass, you just need to pay more for a good cartridge'. Two salespeople in different branches of a major chain said there's no need to pay extra for brass, and the only reason some taps cost more than others is the brand and the design - they then pushed their own ranges of not-all-brass taps. Another store's saleswoman said of course all-brass is better as it won't corrode, and it's worth getting a decent NZ or European cartridge as they're tested using the kind of high water pressure we have in Australia. Incidentally, if you want a German tap at a lower price, Plumbtec have a line of Hansa taps that are less expensive than the standard Hansa range but IMO even look a little better. I've emailed Hansa and have been told the components and materials are the same as the standard range. The price was the same as some not-all-brass taps being pushed by a competitor (I was quoted $165 for a basin mixer).
