Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Dec 12, 2010 7:12 pm Hi So we got a very old toilet near the laundry and the tool shed, which seems to have been there since 1930s, under a slab of cement. The toilet is brandless and to this day seems rare to find due to the age of caromas and/or fowlers taking over. My goal is to simply have it removed and keep it for such occasion and replace it with a caroma, but it seems it might take a lot to get it out as it might break when trying to attempt to dislodge it and it is also connected to some kind of pipe. Maybe some collection/recollection/antique stores may have similar brands such as this, but do you think it might be a DIY or does it require a plumber? Any suggestions for which is the best tools for such a occasion? Here are some pics. http://img502.imageshack.us/i/imgp1046.jpg/ http://img573.imageshack.us/i/imgp1048.jpg/ http://img146.imageshack.us/i/imgp1050q.jpg/ http://img600.imageshack.us/i/imgp10520.jpg/ http://img703.imageshack.us/i/imgp1055.jpg/ http://img253.imageshack.us/i/imgp1057.jpg/ http://img526.imageshack.us/i/imgp1059q.jpg/ http://img818.imageshack.us/i/imgp10600.jpg/ http://img694.imageshack.us/i/imgp1062w.jpg/ If you have any suggestions, please tell. Thanks. Re: Old toilet 2Dec 12, 2010 7:32 pm Hi, I can't identify what brand it is but I think you will find it is not worth anything, if that is what you mean. This is due to all these old toilet bowls needing a 15 litre flush, and virtually no-one is installing those now unless they are very ornate. One second hand building yard I went to complained that they had 5 or 6 old Royal Doulton dunnies which had sat there for years. To remove my old dunny I used a hammer and chisel on the bowl. That waste pipe behind going down into the floor needs a bit more careful handling though, as depending on what type of new dunny you get, you might want to keep the earthenware pipe collar intact. I did that by carefully drilling holes into the mortar between the pipe collar and the dunny, and chipping it out. Ask your plumber what to do, as yes, the new connection has to be done by a tradie. Cheers Cheers Re: Old toilet 3Dec 12, 2010 8:09 pm Ah okay. It looks like it might handle a chisel and hammer, though the connection at the back might be a lot of work as it's also cemented a bit on the wall. The toilet though use to have a high level cistern, but it now has a concorde dual flush cistern now. But it seems like it might do for someone like a tradie to do the job, but I'll see what I can do. I might not have a problem with the pan though, but the connecting part might take up a lot of work just to fit the right installation of a new toilet bowl. Re: Old toilet 4Dec 21, 2010 5:41 pm Hm gross. Thanks for posting that first photo without a warning. Old toilets are not worth hanging onto. I can't see them increasing in value at any time in the future. Whether you break it while removing or whether you remove it without breaking it you'd still be best to take it to the tip. Re: Old toilet 6Jan 13, 2011 3:10 am Sure, you could just take a sledge hammer to it. But imagine the mess and the subsequent cleanup. It is far easier to remove a toilet in a measured and systematic manner that will minimize mess and even contamination.
