Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Nov 21, 2010 6:39 am Hi, was wondering if anyone could help. Have been using the evil google and i'm getting conflicting advise from what i've read on the internet and what the tile shops and tilers are saying. We moved into a new house recently and our current tiles are horrible and the grout is black - everywhere except for the back of the cupboards! We are going to re-tile and are going to use a 500x500 ceramic matt tile (beaumont-drift sand-wear rating 3). We are going to use a grey grout but i'm worried its going to go black too. How do i stop this from happening, the tile shops and tilers say i shouldn't seal the grout or tiles but the internet says different!! AHHH what is everyones experiences? thanks Re: grout question? 2Jan 30, 2011 8:12 pm Hey You won't need to seal your grout if it is black! I am surprised that you are going for a grey grout considering the tile you have chosen. I would have gone for the grout colour Mudberry or Alabaster (the goal there is to match the colour of the tile as best you can). Even if you choose a grey grout, it wont turn out black as site conditions ususally make the grout come out lighter then the samples you have seen. If you use a light grout you should seal it. But if you intend to use harsh chemicals to clean the floor (like bleach), then dont bother. It just removes the sealant, rendering all your hard work useless. As for sealing your tiles, as they are a glazed ceramic, they have already been sealed! Hope that helps Court Re: grout question? 3Jan 30, 2011 8:58 pm Ah, whatever you do, please reconsider using Drift Sand matt on the floor or as a splashback. It is a stunning looking tile, but a magnet for stains and dirt. And you need to really scrub it if you want it cleaned. I'm wondering if all the scrubbing would damage the tile eventually. I wouldn't use grey grout with this, I think light beige would be better - if you really want colloured grout. My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: grout question? 4Jan 31, 2011 4:40 pm Hi, at a job recently spoke to a tile cleaner who cleans and seals tiles/grout and he said because tiles/grout is porous it stains and gets dirty easily. He said if people sealed the tiles when they are laid they wouldn't have to worry with keeping them looking nice. I dont know why they dont do it when they lay a floor but what your being told, sealing sounds good to me. I saw the job he did cleaning and re-sealing and it was amazing and in the process of getting him to do mine.
