Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Nov 07, 2010 9:09 am Hi, We are currently looking at our different options for windows and privacy in our bathrooms. We are looking at a few options including blinds/curtains, installing obscure glass or applying a frosted film to the windows ourselves. What are you using in your bathrooms and what helped you decide on that option? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Erin Re: Bathroom privacy options 2Nov 07, 2010 9:19 am Good morning erinc, welcome to the forums. Our ensuite is the obscured glass (the wavy stuff with the bumps in it) with tint, the main bathroom is the obscured glass with tint and blinds. Seems to of worked, no neighbourly complaints about seeing my bum from the street...yet Re: Bathroom privacy options 3Nov 07, 2010 9:31 am We are putting obscured glass. I am still going to put window coverings though just for looks. Our bathrooms face the bush anyway, I tend to go nudie around the house so I will no doubt scare the neighbours either way Re: Bathroom privacy options 4Nov 07, 2010 10:56 am Hi, We have the translucent white glass. It was pushed to us by the installer, who said it was the best value for cost, as it gives a good soft even light in the daytime. Seems to be right. Cheers Re: Bathroom privacy options 5Nov 07, 2010 1:14 pm We have clear glass. I couldn't see the point of paying to have obscured glass and then putting window coverings over the window anyway. We have dual rollers in the main bathroom, an e-screen and a blockout for when the light is on. The e-screen is awesome because we can lay in the bath or have a shower and see outside but no one can see in. And it's nice to have the blinds up and just have daylight and something to look at when cleaning or just brushing teeth. The e-screen cost less than the obscure glass would have, but we have the benefit of looking out to the garden and the kangaroos.... (and next door's tradies ) In the ensuite we don't have a window, but French doors out to the alfresco.... still debating what to do here (sheet up at the moment) but probably e-screen over the glass in the doors and then curtains for night. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Bathroom privacy options 7Nov 07, 2010 1:23 pm We have Satinlite obscure glass in bathroom and ensuite. It works well during the day... BUT!!! Being the scaredy cat that I am, I tested it the first night we moved in. I had DP stand in the bathroom with the light on while I went outside and looked in. The blue of his shirt appeared a lot brighter from the outside than it actually was on the inside. That was enough for me to dodge night time showers with the light on We had already planned on putting slimline silver venetians in the bathrooms anyway, which we went and got the next day Oceanic with Nautilus upgrades. We spoke with the builder today who is now going to give us obscured glass at no extra cost so we'll see how that goes. I'm with you Oceanus - i'll be out there on the first night checking just how much it obscures! Might need to go with blinds too. Thanks again! Re: Bathroom privacy options 9Nov 07, 2010 4:28 pm I'd also go with the blinds as you can close/partially open the blinds with the window wide open and have airflow with privacy. In bright sunny Darwin we do this daily with no problems with privacy or mould due to having to have the window closed. Re: Bathroom privacy options 10Nov 08, 2010 2:26 pm We will have obscured glass as it is required on certain windows, something to do with distances and boundaries blah blah blah. 2 out of 3 of our bathrooms won't be able to be seen into so I won't bother with window treatments. Our ensuite depends on where the windows nextdoor upstairs will be, but I'm not too worried about it because it is only the bath and they would only see a sillouette. Re: Bathroom privacy options 11Nov 08, 2010 2:47 pm We have sliding windows with obscure glass. If I had another chance, I would install sash window with obscure or milky glass. Then you can have the best of both worlds - you could keep the top part of the window opened while having a bath/shower to prevent moisture build-up, and at the same time have complete privacy, all without having to install any additional privacy blinds (unless you want to). This is good if noone can look down into your house, and especially for first floor bathrooms. My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Bathroom privacy options 12Nov 08, 2010 9:24 pm Depends whether it is on the facade or not? Eg two of our minor ensuites are on the facade - these we chose to have clear glass to blend with the surrounding windows (there are 12 in total across the front facade, all identical). To have two in frosted would have looked blurgh!! Our main ensuite is located on the side of the house and not seen from the front so therefore we went with obscured glass. All windows have timber look wide slat venetians - bathrooms included - for privacy. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Bathroom privacy options 13Nov 09, 2010 1:35 pm We just had all bathroom windows set high with obscure glass. Fortunately we sit above the neighbour so nobody can look down into our bathrooms. We went with sash window in the main toilet & bathroom and are wishing we had done the same in our ensuite (sliding). I am not a fan of window furnishings in bathrooms, just another place to trap mould. Unless we could change the window to a sash window My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Bathroom privacy options 15Nov 13, 2010 7:32 pm erinc Hi, We are currently looking at our different options for windows and privacy in our bathrooms. We are looking at a few options including blinds/curtains, installing obscure glass or applying a frosted film to the windows ourselves. I just put in some obscure film in our powder room and ensuite windows today, a pretty easy job and cheap to DIY - you can see the pics here http://tim-and-tina.blogspot.com/2010/11/diy-obscuringfrosting-windows.html. These windows also face west, i'm hoping that when the summer properly hits the obscure tint will help reduce temperatures in these rooms. if not, might have to add roller blinds or something simple that'll block light more thoroughly.
