Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Nov 03, 2010 3:06 pm I would like to have a tiled shower base on timber floor. I’ve read a lot about how this is done and spoken to a couple of tradespeople. Initially everyone says: we will do it, no worries. As conversation goes along and I mention possible leaks etc they always say – I’ve done a shower base in my own bathroom, or “just get a shower base, it’s safer”, or “lowering the floor lots of work etc. I just see no confidence unless I go for really expensive waterproofing solution, say 1500 just for the shower base – see this for example - http://www.atlantis.com.au/ For safety reasons, I was ready to decide on acrylic shower base which I don’t really like. Here is the alternative: shower base designed to be tiled on - http://www.universalshowerbase.com/ They have a 1000x1000 shower base for $450 - this is not too bad! I won’t bother with lowering the floor. I’m happy to have a hob as soon as it’s all tiled and safe from waterproofing point of view. The only issue Universal Shower Base does not make corner 1000x1000 showers. Are there any alternatives? Re: Tiled shower base on timber floor 2Nov 05, 2010 6:32 pm Tricky but not impossible. Even with the universal base you need to cut into the floor joists and lower the base in order to get it flush with the floor, then tile, or the alternative to no universal showerbase is cut floor, Hardie's waterproof scryon cement sheet, waterproof membrane where needed, create showerbase with cement with proper fall, tile, grout, sealer. I wanted a flush showerbase in my new custom build house. Guess what, the builder said no can do because possies cannot be cut into so I have a built up tile shower base. It's not what I wanted but it was not specified in the plans either so I had to do as he said. Re: Tiled shower base on timber floor 3Nov 13, 2010 11:11 am McKinnon Tricky but not impossible. On the ground floor I am using floor boards on battens over a concrete slab, so there is plent of room there to fit in the shower base and have a seemless timber floor to tile wet area which has a flush tiled shower base. What I'm trying to get at, is if you don't like the answer your builder gives you go investigate it further, in this instance for me it's been well worth it. I have seen poly marble shower bases last in excess of 30 years 1 4492 No, I even have sections of narrowness where the tiles won't slide up any further. When I manage some spare time, I might play around with the first DIY part of my… 7 4918 Thank you so much. We ended going with the terrain that’s part of our brick. 2 2484 |
