Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Oct 08, 2010 12:28 pm Hi all,
We selected different tiles for the first floor main bathroom and ensuite and the ground floor powder room and laundry. But now.. thinking about it, I am not sure if that is a good idea or not ? My idea was to create different looks on each floor. Also I have no idea if 400*400 tiles look better than 300*300 and we should select bigger tiles if possible ? The cost of laying is the same for both these sizes. Any ideas/suggestion, much appreciated !! Plz he 2Oct 08, 2010 2:57 pm Eh that's fine, I have different tiles for upstairs and downstairs. I wouldn't go large tiles in bathrooms though (unless its just continuing the same tiles from the rest of the floor) as you get lots of cuts depending on the size of the bathroom. It might also make smaller bathrooms look even smaller. 300x300 is a pretty standard bathroom floor tile. Re: Different tiles on each floor,is it a good idea ? Plz he 3Oct 08, 2010 8:36 pm Sorry, but i like the flow of the basics colour wise. Remember going through a house that had all colours everywhere, didn't like it at all. We will be going for the same floor/wall tiles/carpet/wood through-out bathrms, laundry, toilet. The kitchen will have a diiferent feature tile, even the same wall colour except bedrms will have a feature wall. I plan to change/add interest by way of picture, displays etc. But thats me, if you love anything,go for it,have what you wont Block bought 1st RBC X! 2nd Ventrua,Keeper! Plz he 4Oct 09, 2010 12:25 am We're having kids bathroom, toilet & laundry in shades of grey. But our ensuite will be browns/lattes to match our bedroom. We figured ensuite is somewhere where only we see and we wanted it to flow with our room decor I think as long as you keep things in same area similar colours it will be fine. EG dont have laundry in one set of colours then bathroom near it totally different Re: Different tiles on each floor,is it a good idea ? Plz he 5Oct 09, 2010 1:21 pm They don't have to be the same colour but it is a good idea to keep the same colour scheme through an entire house. I tried to bargain with my designer to let me use green in the guest ensuite, but she said use is to decorate GREAT but nothing permanent, to keep it the same scheme as the other 2 bathrooms. She has told me to pick 1 thing (whether it be main tiles or a feature tile) and keep it the same through all 3 to tie them together, then I can change the other things. I cant really see any point in haveing the ensuite and main bathroom in matching colours - especially if, like our house, they are at opposite ends of house to each other - I mean, you never go from one bathroom to the next so there is no continuity or flow of decor - like, for example, a kitchen/ laundry which may flow into each other. Re: Different tiles on each floor,is it a good idea ? Plz he 7Oct 09, 2010 2:10 pm I love the tile you have picked for the ensuite/main - the square one with the features, I think its the same one I have picked that hubby isnt quite sure about. With the wet areas, I think you can have different tiles as long as they arent adjoining rooms - so on different floors I'd probably do the same thing. Personally for the flooring in the bathwoom I wouldnt use larger than a 300x300 tiles but I dont really like the look of large tiles. We will probably have the same wall/floor tiles in all teh wet areas with different feature tiles - but that depends on what we agree on Re: Different tiles on each floor,is it a good idea ? Plz he 8Oct 09, 2010 2:51 pm Helyn Wow, glad I didnt have a designer; I dont need anyone else to "let" me do anything with my own house. She is very good at what she does, that is why we have hired her. It's all about them giving you an honest opinion, something you struggle to find with anyone else - none of my friends or hubby have the guts to tell me they hate something i've got in my mind - I needed someone to tell me what would and wouldn't work. She also know the budget of things without having to get everything priced, which is extremely handy. Whilst I could do it on my own, after using her I would never go down the path of doing it on my own again. Such an easy way to find things you never knew existed or never would have considered before it being brought to you to view. Re: Different tiles on each floor,is it a good idea ? Plz he 9Oct 09, 2010 3:15 pm Whether or not it's a good idea will depend on what you're hoping to achieve - with smaller properties I am a firm believer that 'less is more', and therefore highly recommend keeping the same flow colours throughout. This doesn't mean however that all the tiles and colours need to be the same mind you. For example, pick the main paint colour for the home, but use different accent colours (say living spaces have same coloured accent -feature wall - and bedrooms will have a different feature wall - but the main colour is the same). You can apply the same principles with your tiles. Keeping the floor tiles the same throughout, but using different colours in the wall tiles or feature tile. Personally, I've always applied a 'less is more' principle to my own homes as I like things to be cohesive. But this approach isn't right for everyone, and I've seen some properties which have vastly different schemes throughout but they look fantastic - usually though these homes are on a much larger scale than your average family home. Re: Different tiles on each floor,is it a good idea ? Plz he 10Oct 09, 2010 7:46 pm When we were picking our tiles, I had picked a smaller tile but the consultant talked us out of it, because as she said, the smaller the tile, the more grout you will have. So she suggested we go with a 600mm tile and therefore will be less grout. This tile will be throughout the whole house (1 storey). Barb Re: Different tiles on each floor,is it a good idea ? Plz he 11Oct 10, 2010 12:35 am Here is my take on it ... we have five bathrooms ranging from guest ensuite which will be the guest toilet bathroom downstairs, two kids ensuites (ages 4 and 7) our ensuite (which is having a bath made out of wood) and another bathroom on the third floor. I spent HOURS and HOURS trawling through tile shops. I saw gorgeous tiles I loved (but nt their price!) and very ordinary tiles and I couldnt get my head around it so I took my husband along on Saturday. At first I was regretting it as he lost his lolly in some fancy tile shop we went in when the 'trumped up tile seller' wasnt really all that interested in us (we didnt put on our Sunday best to go tile shopping, just jeans!) as we didnt appear 'schmick' enough! Then we went to another shop and I was freaking out again as all DH wanted was flipping feature tiles ..... everywhere. With half an hour left before we HAD to leave we wondered into this massive tile shop, found a lovely consultant who listened to us and gave us some good advice. The point of my tale - all bathrooms have got exactly the same tiles - a granite look floor tile and white wall tiles, all done in fifteen minutes and we still love our choice. I am jealous of Mrs Green, oh to have a designer. This business is a complete minefield and someone kicking my a$%£ would have done me the world of good! Keep it simple and tart it up with goodies! Re: Different tiles on each floor,is it a good idea ? Plz he 12Oct 10, 2010 6:11 am Hey rupz, we've done the same thing!!! And we love it!!! But wait, there's more ... we'll most likely have yet another different tile in main hallway and kitchen!! Oh btw, can you tell me what is the name/brand/shop of your Laundry Floor Tiles?? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Different tiles on each floor,is it a good idea ? Plz he 13Oct 10, 2010 7:07 am different is fine IMO. we have completely different colour schemes in ensuite and main bathroom. the 2 bathrooms as others have said are at least a 45 second walk away from each other and would never be seen in even remotely the same eyeshot. our laundry is the same as the main bathroom, but mostly because I couldn't be bothered choosing another set of tiles "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. Currently scaping the land. Re: Different tiles on each floor,is it a good idea ? Plz he 14Oct 10, 2010 8:49 am I know lots of people say to keep it the same, but I think ensuites can be different as really, no one besides you sees your ensuite. We've done it both ways. Our first house we had them all different, second house we had all the same floor tiles, but the wall tiles and cabinets were different, this house we have gone all the same, except the laundry had different cupboards. Re: Different tiles on each floor,is it a good idea ? Plz he 15Oct 11, 2010 6:35 pm I think this topic is one of personal choice. You won't get any clear answers because everyone will be giving you 'their' opinion on what 'they' like. I would say that you made a well-thought choice already and you should just stick with it or it'll drive you crazy. There'll always be something new or some different colour etc etc... But where does it stop?? Your 1st choice is usually the best choice. Having cold feet or a change of heart goes with the stress of building. I have built 7 homes now- the 1st was all different colours, the 2nd one colour theme, the 3rd different colours in each coz of all the new beautiful choices out there nowadays.. it was too confusing & when I couldn't decide, I ended up using all 4 tiles that I was tossing up over. Now I just trust my 1st instincts.. it's all too much & it can stress you out so much that you can have a break down over it (or a big fight with your other half). Your choices are very nice-just pick a good tiler... if in Perth try my tiler- Jon: 0401 266 882 he's the best!! good luck Suzy Re: Different tiles on each floor,is it a good idea ? Plz he 16Oct 16, 2010 12:48 pm Here my opinion: Go for the same theme throughout. It will look like a hodge-podge otherwise, but of course, its a subjective thing. We like white but stark white is just too much of a good thing, so we chose for the walls a nice light off-white/cream with a line-texture. Looks smashing. Green floor ! I cant believe Im writing this but it does look good! Not unless you have managed to put it as a special condition into the contract somehow. 1 6050 You must be new to the internet. I hate to break it to you, there are insects and… 6 4797 yep you need a joint, foam is easiest, will look fine once rendered with a joint. 2 5222 |
