Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Oct 07, 2010 4:36 pm Hi, I want to renovate a bathroom in my house in Seaford, VIC. There are plenty of companies offering "complete bathroom renovation" I think I will save money if I hire plumber, plasterer, tiler and electrician myself... Question: Do you think this is a fair assumption? What I found if I call plumbers in the local newspaper they don't do bathroom renovations. All they can is to fix a leaking tap or fit new hot water service... This was a surprise for me. Anyway, can anyone recommend a plumber around Frankston-Chelsea-Cranbourne area, VIC? Bathroom is next on our list so Im considering having a go myself so I would be interested in what you decide to do and how you progress - good luck with it all Re: Plumbers vs bathroom renovators (VIC) 3Oct 26, 2010 6:06 am Hi I am doing exactly that with the addition of floors as well although I have left the electricity and plumbing to the experts as I am in a unit and I have brick walls and concrete. So far so good now is the appliances that fail to turn up Re: Plumbers vs bathroom renovators (VIC) 4Dec 06, 2010 10:27 am bathrooms are actually simple i have no idea why there is such a perceived fear of them other than the fact if you only have one then you might be rinsing off out of a bucket for a little bit. Its about following the steps and solid communication. I prefer to hire my contractors on an hour rate but i am getting better at estimating how long it will take and at juding personality so tend not to get ripped off. My theory also is unless you are trying to save something do it all in one hit and do it once. You are already going to have a plasterer on site so just strip it all off, plaster isn't that expensive, doing a whole 2 x 3m room instead of patching some and installing some will end up being about the same, and your service installers will be quicker if they aren't worrying about how to get stuff around. I had my last one done with cement sheet which can be painted over, so much easier just having all the 'wet' walls with one material rather than have blueboard/half water resistant plaster. If you strip something back and find rot bite the bullet and fix it, of the two places i have done recently both ended getting new 32mm and a bit of sub floor replacement. Go nuts with silicon, seriosly i probably go overboard but i prefer silicon in every corner, even well mixed and set grout will crack in corners over time, i also silicon bothsides of the upright sections of a shower screen and the outside of the bottom bit of the screen. Re: Plumbers vs bathroom renovators (VIC) 5Dec 15, 2010 9:20 am If you want someone to do the renovation get a builder / carpenter. The plumber just does plumbing. electrician /wiring etc. My OH is a chippy but subs to a bathroom company. He does all the stripping out, framing to straighten walls etc, plasters, cornices. The cabinet makers make the cabinets and they are dropped to site and he fits them. Tiler tiles. Plumber does plumbing and electrician does wiring, although he will do small tiling / fix tiling, some plumbing. So, to cut a long story short, look for a carpenter / builder Were struck with: Colorbond Ironstone Grey roof and cream windows.
