Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry Re: Recessed Shower Shelves 2Sep 28, 2010 5:35 pm I wouldn't think they're any more likely to leak than other tiles; they just have to be sealed properly! To construct the one in my home they put a square of timber (niche-sized) inside the wall frame then plastered (with waterproof plaster as normal) then tiles, grout and sealant on top. It certainly hasn't started leaking yet (but then I'm yet to move in ) Re: Recessed Shower Shelves 3Sep 28, 2010 5:40 pm Re: Recessed Shower Shelves 4Sep 28, 2010 5:43 pm I have 2 large recessed shower shelves. They were done properly with all the layers of sealants etc. and then tiles and grout and more mastic for the joins. It looks a million dollars and I have not noticed any issues with them - and let me tell you , I would notice if there was an issue of any sort. If you want them, then by all means install them - they are very very usefull. Suburbia is where the developer bulldozes out the trees, then names the streets after them. Re: Recessed Shower Shelves 6Sep 29, 2010 8:58 am Thanks, they look better now that they have been masticized. I'll hold of showing final product for a while, want everything done first. Re: Recessed Shower Shelves 7Sep 29, 2010 1:16 pm We have one in our main ensuite shower which runs 2m in length. Almost 12mths in and no problems here. If there was a massive problem with them I couldn't see how big builders like EB / PD would keep installing them? Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Recessed Shower Shelves 8Sep 29, 2010 1:21 pm If you're builder is worried about the shelf leaking, then I'd be worried about the entire bathroom! I mean, if the shelf is going to fail (that is, allow water to seep through the waterproofing behind the tiles) then I'd imagine the rest of the room wouldn't be any less of a risk... Re: Recessed Shower Shelves 9Sep 29, 2010 1:26 pm My builder wouldnt put then in either - said they have had too many problems with them leaking. I think they are a great space saver and look neater than having shampoo bottles etc all over the floor. Site Start: 10th September, 2010 PCI : Friday 27th January, 2011. Re: Recessed Shower Shelves 11Sep 29, 2010 3:33 pm Our builder told us they could be problematic down the track - so he puts them above direct water level - ours is at head height on the side, to minimise water sitting or pooling on it - a bit of a pain as the kids can't reach theirs (they couldn't anyway at this stage even if it was at chest height either I suppose, lol) - but would rather this than encounter a 'possible' problem. The small one is in our ensuite - as well as one guest room one (the silver tiles) http://i998.photobucket.com/albums/af109/mymoogles/DSC01211.jpg http://i998.photobucket.com/albums/af109/mymoogles/DSC06761.jpg Building on the Sunshine Coast - Land settled 22nd July 2009 Building contract finally signed (after much deliberation on our part) 11th November 2009 Building commences 25th January 2010 - small local builder End of June - almost completed fit out 26th July - MOVE IN DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Re: Recessed Shower Shelves 13Sep 29, 2010 4:58 pm Here's a pic of mine if you are interested http://i1001.photobucket.com/albums/af135/grom40/George017.jpg I think as long as you don't let water pool in it there wouldn't be a problem with it leaking. Re: Recessed Shower Shelves 15Sep 30, 2010 1:36 pm We had them done. No problems yet but they are only 3 months old. Our tiler put a 2mm fall on them (back to front) so water does not pool. As others have said, if they leak then it is probably a good sign that the rest of your waterproofing is compromised. Great for storing all the normal bathing paraphanelia a family of 5 accumulates (3 kidlets under 5 so they shower in our ensuite, their ensuite showers are not being used at present). Some things are worth waiting for. Basically. If the shelves are fixed then they will be screwed in just the same as the rest of the carcass. You could recess the windows (just keep in… 1 3994 I'll look into different shower heads and ask the plumber about some engineering and see what he says. Thanks 2 9563 |
