Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Sep 09, 2010 3:29 pm Alrighty, well...in our potential new property, the bathrooms (and particular the ensuite) are in need of a slight change... We can't change the tiles right now. The floor tiles are...hmm. Questionable but look better in real life than in photos, I must admit. The wall tiles are ok. Just plain cream and in good condition. The tiles only go up to a certain point so we can paint the walls above, which will be good, but I want to know what colour to paint them!! Here is 2 pics, firstly of the main bathroom (ignore the green/blue mirror on the wall right now), and the second is the ensuite. Right now the ensuite walls are PINK. This will obviously change. lol (the paint colours don't have to be the same for both rooms) Also, in the ensuite, those things on the wall (the pedestal sink, the medicine cabinet narrow mirror, the towel ring, robe hook and rail thing), they'll all be replaced with a small proper vanity with large mirror. I'm not sure whether the vanity would be white or cream with a pale brown or neutral bench top, or if it'd be a brown wood with paler bench top. 1. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ 2. Right now my partner's thinking of something of something like... http://www.concretegreenville.com/concr ... ng-colors/ Sunset red, roast chestnut, or taos tan. I myself would lean towards roat chestnut of those ones. And also, what colour bath mats would go best? My partner wants bright warm colours in the bathroom for the towels, like burnt orange or something. Sort of aztec / morrocan themed. But I don't know about such a bright colour for the bath mat. Too strong perhaps? I can't get out of my head that nice cream / off white / pale beige would look nice, but I'm really not sure. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Bathroom colours - can't change tiles but can paint wall 2Sep 10, 2010 9:02 am You know, it's pretty difficult sometimes to get advice off the internet 'cos at the end of the day people have different taste. To be honest, I would recoil from a bathroom - especially one that small - painted roast chestnut. It just seems dark & grubby to me. I would go white with bathrooms that small. It gives the impression of light & space. If you wanted dramatic, I would say rip out all the tiles & use a coloured mosaic on the whole thing. I've seen this with green glass mosaic & even black (need a lot of lighting). So see, I am no use to you at all, LOL. If you have an aversion to white I'd stay with a really pale beige on the walls & white ceilings. I guess if you are looking to live there long term you really need to stick with what you'd really love - and not get sick of in 5 yrs. As for the ensuite, if it's as small as it looks I wouldn't be putting a vanity in as it will take up half the available floor. I'd go for a floating sink/bench & new mirror cabinet, preferably built into the stud wall (hopefully it's a stud!). Re: Bathroom colours - can't change tiles but can paint wall 3Sep 10, 2010 12:52 pm Hmm…yeah…but I’m over all white bathrooms. I find they don’t make even small rooms like any bigger…they just, to me, look like mini versions of the standard cold and clinical white bathrooms that so many places have these days. I like white IF there’s variations of cream and other pale neutrals to add depth and shading, but that’s not really an option here so… I can’t really afford to rip out the tiles, I’m afraid. In the ensuite it’d cost NOTHING to put new nice tiles in, but the existing small blegh tiles are expensive to remove, as apparently that type of tile is glued down (like, 30 years ago) and SO hard to lift and remove. Yeah, the ensuite really is SMAAAALL. But I hate not having any storage space for all my many things that need to live in the bathroom…if I had a floating sink thing, where would the storage be? No drawers or cupboards, you know? There’s never enough storage in a mirrored above-sink cabinet. Unless it went along the whole entire WALL, which would look odd and bad, it’d not be anywhere near enough storage. I’d be very open to a nice floating sink thing with nice big mirror above (with no storage, or small attractive storage capacity), IF elsewhere in the ensuite was there room to put a nice storage unit. Like those ones with wooden frame and cane baskets inside, like pull out drawers. I like them. But there’s no room in the ensuite! I also want a chandelier in the ensuite. Lol. *going crazy with decadence now* How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Bathroom colours - can't change tiles but can paint wall 4Sep 12, 2010 2:58 pm Hmm, see this ad thing for some website, and it's got 2 pics, before & after? The white "before" one I don't like. Yes, it's white and pale, which is the "rule" for smaller rooms, but the darker "after" picture I MUCH prefer. The whites pop in it, and it's cosy and warm...that's sort of what I'm talking about for the small ensuite paint colour. I don't need to be surrounded by white or light if it's gonna look drab. And NO amount of pale paint is gonna make this ensuite look big! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Bathroom colours - can't change tiles but can paint wall 5Sep 13, 2010 11:13 am I think its pretty common sense that ensuites arent big so i dont think you need to make area feel big IMO. Go for something darker and cosy - has a lovely feel Re: Bathroom colours - can't change tiles but can paint wall 7Sep 13, 2010 4:49 pm You really think they're that bad? I agree, they look BAD in the photos, but they really don't look anywhere near as unpleasant in real life. It'd be BETTER though, in my mind, to have a nice cosy darker wall (painted I mean, since the wall tiles I'd leave as their existing light cream) if the floor tiles were lighter...and yeah, there's tile paint, but I heard it doesn't do well on floor tiles cause there's constant wear from foot traffic, etc. How the hell did I become a senior member!? TBH, both rooms are screaming out for a complete reno. Haha. I won't show you mine then. I think with fresh paint and a bathmat they will look good. Why spend thousands unnecessarily. Re: Bathroom colours - can't change tiles but can paint wall 10Sep 14, 2010 1:50 pm Oh yes, of course both bathrooms could do with a total overhaul, but we really can’t afford to spend ANYTHING…the only reason we’re ok with spending a single cent is cause we love the property despite these things. I think the cost of new tiles in the ensuite at least would be tiny (such a small floor area to cover), but the cost of removing the existing small tiles may be very high. I’d get a quote and see. It’d be a really quick job if the tiles could be lifted easily. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing!
