Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Aug 19, 2010 1:17 pm We have have chosen (for our yet to be built house) in our bathrooms and powder room a dark charcoal grey floor tile and white gloss tiles on the walls, I am having trouble deciding on vanity cupboards and benchtop colour - they will both be laminex/formica. At the moment the choice for our vanity cupboards is formica warm white which is a white with a touch of warmth, but we chose it because it was within our builders range, not necessarily because we like it, so I am having second thoughts. It is a warmer white than the wall tiles and I think will look a bit odd. We also were looking into charcoal laminate vanitytops but now I am not so sure. I would love stone but it is out of our budget, and I dont like laminates that are "pretend" stone (they look lovely but its just not for me). I have since discovered "Pure Calcite" which is a white with tiny grey flecks in it which I really like, but am not sure what colour vanity doors would go with this as a benchtop. Would love any suggestions as to which colour schemes might go with the floor and wall tiles (pics would be even better!). Many thanks... Re: What colour vanity & benchtop - charcoal floor & white w 2Aug 20, 2010 9:32 am The Pure Calcite sounds lovely. If you teamed it with a dark grey it could give quite a modern look, but it depends how large & light the room is. If you go for a white vanity you must make sure it's pure white to match the tiles, not a creamy white. This would drive me insane! Your colours also look lovely with wood for a bit of warmth. A blond wood vanity with pure white top would also be nice. Re: What colour vanity & benchtop - charcoal floor & white w 3Aug 20, 2010 9:39 am I think my tile colors are kinda similar to yours; grey on the floor and white on the walls. Here's a pic of my bathroom cabinet (sorry it's a bit blurry): From what I can remember the base is platinum (I think) and the benchtop is oiled soapstone. Although you said you don't like fake stone the oiled soapstone actually looks good IMHO. Good luck with making the choice (it's so difficult to choose from the tiny samples they give you!) Re: What colour vanity & benchtop - charcoal floor & white w 4Aug 20, 2010 12:43 pm xquisite - thanks very much for your response, yes the pure calcite is lovely. I think I am now deciding on that with either charcoal or proper white cupboards or the charcoal benchtop with proper white cupboards. All of these would be upgrades but I agree it would really bug me when we have a house full of white whites and the vanities in a creamy white! Our bathrooms aren't massive, and my biggest concern with dark cupboards is it clashing or looking wrong with the floor, but the charcoal is a really close match to our floors so I think we would be ok. Grom40 thanks for posting a photo - your bathroom looks awesome and i love love love that benchtop! I did a search and only found it on an american site though - the stone look-a-likes our builder was offering was nothing like that, they were awful. Your benchtop laminate is so similar to our floor tiles it is not funny, and sadly I am totally in love with them!! The light grey cupboard looks great too.. so hard to choose! Thanks for helping me though!! Re: What colour vanity & benchtop - charcoal floor & white w 5Aug 20, 2010 2:48 pm We've got dark grey/charcoal floor tiles with gloss white wall tiles to the roof. I ended up going blackened linewood on both the vanity and the tops. I was worried for a while that it was going to be too dark, but I am loving it. May not be everyones taste, but I am more than happy. Am going up to the house soon, will try and see if I can get some pics Re: What colour vanity & benchtop - charcoal floor & white w 7Aug 20, 2010 4:48 pm Hi again Lee, I'm building with big S and I'm pretty sure that oiled soapstone was a laminex colour. I certainly didn't have to pay any extra for it so it must be a fairly standard range. Will look at the samples I have when I get home and let you know the particulars if you're interested. The only shade of grey they have in their selections book is Graphite and I think that may be a formica one that is perhaps not available anymore (couldnt find it on the formica website), I will ask though. Each day I flit from "I will just live with something in the standard range" to "i will pay whatever it takes to get the laminate colour I want".. I'm not sure where I am at the moment to be honest And seeing as we have 3 vanities to cover, the "upgrade" fees may be the same as upgrading to a stone kitchen benchtop - if it came down to that I would rather the stone I think! Fancy having to "upgrade" to a proper white, how crazy is that?!! Rizzoo I would love to see pics please!! Re: What colour vanity & benchtop - charcoal floor & white w 10Aug 23, 2010 1:41 pm We're thinking of doing charcoal (called moonstone) floor tiles, gloss white wall tiles. Then just white formica cabinets & iron ore formica benchtops (medium grey). This will be for main bathroom & laundry
Re: What colour vanity & benchtop - charcoal floor & white w 11Aug 23, 2010 2:31 pm sorry, it isn't that great a pic as it was on my phone, but it gives you an idea. The floors are a darkish grey/charcoal with flecks in it but it's a bit hard to see under the plastic. ensuite was getting grouted, so couldn't take a pic, but it's the same colours. Re: What colour vanity & benchtop - charcoal floor & white w 12Aug 23, 2010 8:46 pm Thanks everyone for your responses. White laminate wouldve probably been my first choice to be honest but I think its ridiculous that I may have to pay an upgrade to get it! It has been nearly 5 weeks since our selections day and we still dont have a price for our choices from back then so obviously we aren't in any particular hurry... so annoying! but anyway.. Rizzo I love your vanity, and I was wondering about having the same on the benchtop and the cupboards because I thought it would look good but I have never seen it before. It looks great! if you have some more pics when they take the top paper stuff off would love to see that too. I think the dark on dark on dark looks really schmick, and I'm going to look at that, will have to take my floor tile into Laminex to compare with their samples I think. Our floor tiles are very similar as I had a look at your build thread, and your house is looking fantastic! well done, great choices.. love it! Re: What colour vanity & benchtop - charcoal floor & white w 13Aug 23, 2010 10:05 pm I was stressing over it until the day they put them in lol. I wasn't sure how it was going to look, but I think the fact that the walls are white means it works well. I was going to get stone tops, but had gone way over budget already, and couldn't find a laminate I was happy with, so figured to go same as the cupboards and I can always change them later, but I like it and will keep it. Will hopefully be able to get some proper pics soon Re: What colour vanity & benchtop - charcoal floor & white w 14Sep 06, 2010 1:19 pm Rizzo, which laminate have you used for the cabinet and benchtop? We have just bought a 22yr old house with 5 bdrms, 3 bathrooms, all still original and its so hard to visualise etc but I would like something similiar in the main bathroom and tie the same colour scheme in the laundry, toilet. That way I could so something totally different for the ensuites if I choose too. Soo many choices, it gets confusing Re: What colour vanity & benchtop - charcoal floor & white w 15Sep 06, 2010 9:05 pm DreamsRfree Rizzo, which laminate have you used for the cabinet and benchtop? I took some better shots today, so will upload them later Re: What colour vanity & benchtop - charcoal floor & white w 17Sep 06, 2010 9:46 pm we have dark charcoal-black floor tiles with a greyish white wispy pattern on them ( they are meant to look marblish) the wall tiles are the reverse. whitish grey with a charcoalish black wisp. We went for a polar white cabinet with black marble look laminex top and a ceramic hand basin. Re: What colour vanity & benchtop - charcoal floor & white w 19Sep 07, 2010 1:49 pm We have dark charcoal tiles with light grey grout, warm white vanities with charcoal bench tops. We broke up the dark and light with a taupe shade of wall tile, as I tend to buy warm browns in towels and have bought mosaic accessories for the vanities that have the same taupe colour tiling on them.
