Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Aug 19, 2010 10:21 pm Hi All Just bought a house that was built in the mid 90's and not wanting to renovate the bathroom just yet as its still functional. I'm looking for some ideas on how to modernise it cheaply, a bit hard when it has slate tiles but looking for ideas and suggestions. The things I want to change are: paint colour towel rails (will chrome go in this bathroom??) towel colour Looking forward to hearing your ideas! Thanks Nat P.S have attached some pics Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Modernising a bathroom with slate tiles 2Aug 20, 2010 9:25 am I actually like the slate & the problem for me is more the apricot coloured bath & shower. This is a little hard to match to. Chrome accessories will definitely help, and you may find that it's pretty reasonable to replace the shower curtain with a shower screen. It looks like you would only need 1 face for the screen with a pivot door. Not sure on the paint colour. I'd be worried that white may just enhance the colour of the bath etc, but it would freshen it up. I'd go for grey towels, which is a modern look & picks out the grey from your floor. Re: Modernising a bathroom with slate tiles 3Aug 20, 2010 4:40 pm Any chance you can replace the taps? New chrome taps along with towel rails would give it a lift. If it was me, I'd think about doing the following: Rip out the wall tiles and replace with plain white gloss ones. That might be a lot cheaper than you think. We did the shower recess and splashback behind our vanity with inexpensive Johnson ultra white gloss tiles at a really minimal cost. It was a few years ago, but the tiles came from Bunnings for a couple of hundred and the tiler only cost us $300. Remove the side glass panel from the shower and have it replaced with a new one, along with a pivot shower door. Chrome trim, semi-frameless, shouldn't be exxy. New taps - these don't have to be expensive either. Towel rails, something modern. Maybe a ladder style? Paint (cheapest item yet! ). Neutral colour. Towels in chocolate and pale green? Or maybe a total contrast in orange or something bright... Keeping the shower base, bath and floor tiles saves heaps. If your budget won't run to new tiles and shower screen, have a look at White Knight tile paint (or similar products) and paint the tiles white, then add a new clear shower curtain. Re: Modernising a bathroom with slate tiles 5Sep 02, 2010 10:11 pm Thanks everyone for your feedback, I have taken it all into account and have been thinking long and hard about what I am going to do. I have decided to definitely go with the chrome towel rails, and possibly update to chrome tap fittings down the track, not too bothered about them at this stage. I think green towels will go great so I'm going to buy some olive green ones. They will match the vanity and also a green tree frog picture I have hanging up! I have also found a nice green & white vase I can sit near the window. A brown cane laundry hamper I am thinking too. Unfortunately the 'tiles' you talk about do not exist, I am not sure what its called but its some type of board that is in place of tiles. It is in good condition just not a big fan of the colour. It doesn't look like it can be painted but I may be wrong. I forgot to mention that I want to replace the faded timber-look blinds. Any ideas on whether I should replace with similar blinds (to match rest of house) or would curtains be better for a bathroom?? Re: Modernising a bathroom with slate tiles 6Sep 03, 2010 9:51 am nat, the olive will look great! I'd definitely stay away from curtains in a bathroom - too humid. You could replace the timber venetians with new ones or go for a white timber-look venetian instead. They would look smart & should be unaffected by humidity. Re: Modernising a bathroom with slate tiles 8Sep 26, 2010 8:05 pm Well I have finished my mini makeover now and am very happy with the result, we ended up doing these things: resealed slate tiles - now looking glossy & new again! re-painted in Dulux Berkshire White new green towels new towel rails new laundry hamper new vase new shower curtain new bath mat new door handles on vanity Have attached some photos... let me know what you think! If you go over the top, your tiles would not have an even surface to be glued to. Im no tiler, but i can imagine a couple of things being an issue… 1 344 |
