Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jul 21, 2010 3:41 pm Hi everyone, We are finally coming towards the end of our renovations thank goodness, but I need some help with the bathrooms please. I would appreciate any ideas/tips/suggestions on anything about our bathroom and ensuite - colours, tiles, vanity, the lot! We are planning on selling at the end of this year/early next year to move to acreage, so don't want to spend too much and will keep the plumbing where it is etc. My hubby will do all the work himself though which helps, plumbing, tiling and all (his Dad's a plumber so that's handy!). Now I know our current bathrooms are beautiful, I hope you don't feel too envious looking at the photos below Seriously, what where they thinking? How could this have ever looked good I don't know. Anway, lots of pics for your viewing pleasure: Main Bathroom: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Timber flooring will continue into the wc. CS benchtops in ice, Dulux White on White 2pac cupboards. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ In here we have just used laminate for the bench and some high gloss something for the cupboards (can't remember what it's called, looks similar to 2pac but not a clean finish on the edges??). So please, I would LOVE your thoughts, especially: 1. Do the 2 bathrooms need to match? If so, what parts (toilets? vanity? sinks? tapwear?)? 2. Should the bathrooms match the kitchen and/or laundry? Again how so? We will use the CS I think for both. 3. Ensuite - should the vanity form part of the shower door, then glass around that? What sort of shower door would work here, I hate the stacking style like we have. 4. Bathroom - the current bath tub is steel and in good condition, but does it look old and should it be replaced to a more modern look? 5. Bathroom - should we move the taps to the far wall and make that area a shelf or something else? Ummm, I'm sure to think of more later, thanks so very much to you all! Cheers, Brooke Re: Bathroom & Ensuite reno, would love your thoughts please 2Jul 21, 2010 7:04 pm Hi Brooke, I had a bit of a giggle looking at your photos - we have a bathroom and a teeny tiny ensuite (exact same set up as yours) that we are renovating soon. Our shower screen is exactly the same as that too and I have the same question about what door would suit so I will be watching with interest the replies. We have gone with floor and wall tiles exactly the same in the bathroom and the ensuite, with similar taps, basins etc. It has just worked out that way because I found tiles that were normally very expensive for a massive sale - less than half price. It is not what I would normally choose for myself but it is very neutral and looks expensive, and as we are hoping to sell in about 12 months or so I figure most people would like it. I think you could do different looks in each bathroom and it would not matter. We are at the stage where we have purchased most of the items to replace the groovy 70's/80's look but I'm a bit scared of the disruption it will cause to be honest, so am procrastinating a bit. Your kitchen is divine by the way, just beautiful... please make sure you post updated pics of your bathroom renos, would love to see the finished result! Re: Bathroom & Ensuite reno, would love your thoughts please 3Jul 22, 2010 8:07 pm Honeyfly 1. Do the 2 bathrooms need to match? If so, what parts (toilets? vanity? sinks? tapwear?)? 2. Bathroom - should we move the taps to the far wall and make that area a shelf or something else? 1. Your bathrooms don't have to match the kitchen and laundry, but I would carry through at least some elements from those rooms, whether it be tiles, benchtops, cabinets or whatever. And I'd definitely use the same toilets, basins and tapwares in both bathrooms. But it's really up to you.... 2. Check out some shower screen supplier's websites and showrooms, even have a talk to a few and ask what they'd recommend (take a sketch of the room). Maybe a simple frameless panel, like this, would work? http://premiumoz.rtrk.com.au/?scid=26564&kw=3785099 It would certainly make the room appear bigger. I'm not sure if there's enough room though. 4. Your bath looks fine. If it's in good nick, save yourselves some $$ and keep it. Updated tiles will make a huge difference to how it looks. 5. No idea. A sketch of the layout with dimensions might help. Have you thought about a pedestal basin, like this one, to give you more space in the ensuite and make the room seem less crowded? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Sure, you lose counter and storage space, but you can add a shelf above it (and below a really big mirror, which will also make the room visually bigger) for toothbrushes and cosmetics and pretty things. And you may have room for a storage unit of some kind next to the toilet, to hide all the neccessary bits and pieces you don't want on display... Given that you're selling, I would tile the walls in a clean crisp white gloss tile, and keep everything fairly neutral. You can dress the rooms up with gorgeous coloured towels and accessories, and prospective buyers will be easily able to visualise their own "stuff" in there. That's exactly what we did when we renovated our ensuite. Minimal cost, and it looked fabulous. I was kicking myself for not doing it a couple of years earlier. I only got to enjoy it for three months.... Re: Bathroom & Ensuite reno, would love your thoughts please 4Jul 22, 2010 9:41 pm Honeyfly 1. Do the 2 bathrooms need to match? I don't think they need to match (mine won't be ) but in terms of costs, you might get a better deal if you do have them matching iykwim 2. Again I've got similar complementing colours in laundry/bath/kitchen 3. No idea what you mean I think you mean having the vanity butting up against the shower glass? I like Kek's idea of the pedestal (although I'd hate to live with it) and then maybe shaving cabinets for storage? No idea for the shower door - maybe just fixed glass halfway? 4. Yep use it I reckon! 5. Yep and maybe make that end a hob, and not a continuation of the vanity. (If I've understood correctly) Again I agree with kek - I'd do a pretty neutral floor tile and white walls. Bel Still not in. Don't ask!? Re: Bathroom & Ensuite reno, would love your thoughts please 5Jul 23, 2010 11:33 am Awesome I think our bathrooms were done by the same people. We had the same colours and the EXACT same shower screen, floor tiles and taps! I'll post a picture when I get home. 1) I don't think the bathrooms need to match. Our main bathroom and ensuite are completely different colour schemes and tiles although we have kept the tapware consistent throughout. 2) The only thing consistent between our kitchen and our bathroom is the white stone benchtops. The ensuite has silver travetine so it is completely different. 3) I hate shower doors. No comment. 4) I'd replace but that's me. I live in a fantasy world of endless monies. 5) Hard to tell? Renovation Thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=38489 Re: Bathroom & Ensuite reno, would love your thoughts please 6Jul 23, 2010 4:42 pm Now this is getting scary - I'm in Sydney and we also have an eerily-similar bathroom and ensuite! It wasn't built by AV Jennings by chance was it? We are also looking at bathroom/ensuite renos and would love to see your after photos once they're done. I personally am so over all this dark "chocolate" cabinetry that's so popular right now so would stick to plain white like your kitchen and laundry. Am looking at cafe latte colour floor tiles and white tiles on the walls - like you, we pretty much are doing it up with the intention of selling up in a couple of years so don't want to go overboard - just want to keep it simple and stylish; hopefully it won't be dated by the time we sell. I also am not a fan of the pedestal basin, especially in a small bathroom, since this cuts in on a lot of usable storage space. When I'm looking at buying a place, storage plays a huge part in my final decision. BTW: your kitchen is gorgeous! Did hubby put that in as well? Was it a flat pack? Re: Bathroom & Ensuite reno, would love your thoughts please 7Jul 24, 2010 10:07 am Thanks everyone so much for your replies! Lee75 - wow also the same shower screen? Lucky you!! I think we will probably use the same tiles as well, hopefully we can find a good deal as well. Yes the disruption won't be pleasant, I think 1 bathroom at a time so we have a functional one at all times. We also have an 8 month old who is crawling everywhere so will be hard work I am imagining! kek - I love those shower screens/panels, I will have to find a way to fit one in somehow! I did consider the pedestal basin, but we're so short for storage in this house as it is that the more the better. I think we will go with a neutral look with white tiles, thanks for your suggestions. I agree, we have waited this long to do the bathrooms then will be out of here after living with those awful ones all this time! Bel - thanks for that, when you say an end hob, what does that mean? So no benchtop over it, just tiles down low?? Biff - haha I love George Constanza! I would love to see a pic of your bathrooms too, how funny. I can see why it was so popular, such a lovely look inthewoods - I actually have no idea who built this house, most likely AV Jennings too then! It was so hideous though, our kitchen was horrid before with brown vinyl bench tops, yuck. Your colour scheme sounds really nice, and I don't think we will use the pedestal basin as we need every inch of storage! Thanks I looooove my kitchen! Yep hubby put it in, he even did the 2pac with my Dad (he's a french polisher). We had a good friend work at a kitchen place and he did all those up for us so not a flat pack, very handy! He doesn't work there anymore though, damn. We got it really well priced too, soft closes and all, loove it! Will definitely post some pics when we're done, hopefully sooner rather than later. Thanks again everyone, keep the ideas rolling in!! Cheers, Brooke Re: Bathroom & Ensuite reno, would love your thoughts please 8Jul 24, 2010 10:16 pm Well it's not exactly the same but there are certainly similarities! It's now gone to a better place........the tip R.I.P Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Renovation Thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=38489 Re: Bathroom & Ensuite reno, would love your thoughts please 9Jul 24, 2010 10:20 pm Oh and does that mean in 30 years time people are going to look at our bathrooms and say 'what were they thinking!?!' Renovation Thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=38489 Re: Bathroom & Ensuite reno, would love your thoughts please 10Jul 25, 2010 9:43 am Hope the photos work. Our bathroom was similar layout. This is how we did it. I thought rather than have a block at the end with wasted space I'd put a place for the clothing bin. Sorry about the mess. Re: Bathroom & Ensuite reno, would love your thoughts please 11Jul 25, 2010 8:21 pm If you desperately need the storage in a vanity cabinet, have a look at the shallower ones, with semi-recessed basins. They're designed for tight spaces and will give you more room. They also make the room look bigger. Something like this: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Or a wall-hung unit will also make the space seem bigger: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ And go for the biggest mirror you can. Did I already say that? Re: Bathroom & Ensuite reno, would love your thoughts please 12Jul 25, 2010 8:30 pm i think the others have given good advice on what to do. just wanted to ask if the house will be for you guys to live in or will you re-sell? I wonder if it's for resale, whether having matching bathrooms might work better. But if it's just for you guys, do whatever you like. My ensuite and bathroom are completely different. But no one ever sees them both except for us, and they are several rooms apart, so I don't think it matters at all. and it allowed me to get a bit creative which was fun love your kitchen/living/dining! the blue accents are wonderful, I personally love the feature wall as is and would leave it! I think the feature wall painted a neutral brown colour would really set off the gorgeous blue splashback (which I might add is exactly the same colour blue glass splashback I'm nagging hubby about for our white kitchen). Dulux Warm Neutral and Hogs Bristle are beautiful colours. Re: Bathroom & Ensuite reno, would love your thoughts please 14Feb 16, 2011 4:07 pm Just bumping this one up to ask:- Honeyfly (or anyone else with the same bathroom/toilet configuration as Honeyfly), just wondering whether you got round to doing your bathroom. Would love to see pics! I need inspiration. Re: Bathroom & Ensuite reno, would love your thoughts please 15Feb 19, 2011 8:27 pm inthewoods - we are in the middle of doing our ensuite right now (finally!!). Haven't started on the main bathroom yet. We have bought the tiles for it though. I will certainly update soon, hubby is about to start the tiling and he put a channel tile-insert grate in so it should look pretty good! Can't wait! Re: Bathroom & Ensuite reno, would love your thoughts please 17Mar 10, 2011 8:19 am Hi Warry, Sorry for the late reply I have been away. I think the splashback is Dulux Baby Motive half-strength and the feature wall is the full strength. I hope I have that the right way around! Re: Bathroom & Ensuite reno, would love your thoughts please 18Mar 30, 2011 8:09 pm Hey there, I'm based on the Sunshine Coast too and have recently (well, not so recently now 4yrs, still feels like new though) completed a reno on my bathroom - now looks fabulous. I've also had it treated with EnduroShield to seal the glass as well as Tile & Grout. We don't ever have mould in the grout now where we couldn't get rid of it before. Also our glass always looks like new and is easy to clean. We have a couple of rental units and couldn't afford full bathroom reno's on those but had the glass restored and EnduroShield applied to glass as well as tile and grout. These units are mainly occupied by uni students and transient people so we didn't expect the bathrooms to stay very clean but I must say that when I do my annual inspections there is never any mould and the glass still looks like new! Worth a try to anyone installing a new bathroom. Re: Bathroom & Ensuite reno, would love your thoughts please 19Apr 15, 2011 7:47 am Honeyfly, if you're still out there - I promise this is my last question! What sort of flooring have you put in? It's just stunning! Since you have it in your kitchen and laundry, I'm assuming it's not real wood but please correct me if I'm wrong. Good luck with your bathroom reno and please remember to post pictures for us to drool over! Re: Bathroom & Ensuite reno, would love your thoughts please 20May 15, 2011 6:32 pm Sorry for the late reply: The floors are a real floating timber called Kempas. It has been fine in the laundry with minor spills until we had a washing machine leak while we were away which has damaged some of the floorboards and we need to replace them. So if we had a reliable washing machine and taps it would have been ok! Only negative I would say is that it does show up all the dust and bits of fluff easily and I have to vacuum pretty regularly, which is a good thing with a 1 year old I guess!
