Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jul 14, 2010 7:07 pm As per the title, first home purchased and am looking at things/ways to customise and improve on what we currently have. The en-suite is fairly small, but IMHO it has been designed fairly poorly - what little space there is has been wasted. So the question, would you bother extending the shower/making it a double shower. As you can see from the photo below, there is currently an unusable void in between the single shower and the wall. Cost would be low. Outside a say 2 square meters of tiling, the cost of the plumbing fixtures them self, and the cost to modify the existing screen, all other work can be completed by myself. Re: Would you bother... 3Jul 14, 2010 7:33 pm If you have the funds, absolutely. Unless you can store a nice clothes basket there to utilise the space? Re: Would you bother... 5Jul 15, 2010 9:58 am From a cost effectiveness point of view I wouldn't bother if you are selling in the short term, but if that is not of primary concern and you are going to live there for an extended period and it is really bugging you then go for it. And FYI, I think you'll find it will be more than 2sqm of tiling to replace. That would be just the floor where you have to smash up the existing hob, extend it and then retile all that area. Then there are the walls! You'll have to rip them off the wall to extend the waterproofing and so fourth. At a guess you'd be looking at a couple of thousand to do it - personally I don't think thats a "cheap" fix. Re: Would you bother... 6Jul 15, 2010 10:49 am I wouldn't bother as pp said the cost of the water proofing for under the hob and the walls is going to be a pain and more likely to have leakage along the join from the old to new. Using the void space more effectively. A tall thin storage cabinet perhaps. Or a wall mounted cabinet sitting from the tiling line in matching laminate to the vanity and a washing basket underneath. I'd be tempted to replace the towel rail with a heated towel rail to update and customise it a bit perhaps. In 10-15 years if the bathroom is needing renovation or looking too old for you then I'd rip out the shower and vanity and re jig the whole ensuite Re: Would you bother... 7Jul 15, 2010 11:26 am Fernyhouse A tall thin storage cabinet perhaps. That's exactly what I was going to suggest. Though perhaps that's 'coz I find there's NEVER enough storage space ANYWHERE (though some crazy people have suggested that maybe I just have too much stuff ) Re: Would you bother... 8Jul 15, 2010 11:46 am Fernyhouse I wouldn't bother as pp said the cost of the water proofing for under the hob and the walls is going to be a pain and more likely to have leakage along the join from the old to new. More cost. You'd just about be doing half a reno anyway. I'd either do a complete reno or leave it. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Will probably put it down a few items on the list of things to do! Cheers for the input! Re: Would you bother... 10Jul 16, 2010 10:50 am I can't understand why that space was left there in the first place. Don't waste your money on changing it now, what's done is done. Get a large potplant and wack it in there. Re: Would you bother... 11Jul 16, 2010 11:32 am My only guess that 3 propriety shower screens were ordered - the house is in a development of 3. The builder/developer probably ordered 3 of several items (A/C, HWS, fixtures etc.) to save a few dollars. Although all house layouts are different, this shower screen probably worked in the other 2 homes, where as it seems like a pointless void in this one! Re: Would you bother... 12Jul 16, 2010 12:00 pm How about something like this? We've put one of these in our bathroom ... only difference is that ours is from K'mart and half the price http://shop.hsw.com.au/?product&id_prod ... &id_dept=9 Re: Would you bother... 13Jul 21, 2010 9:09 am Not sure of your dimensions, but as soon as I saw your post I thought: tall 400mm wide Ikea Billy bookcase with a Morebo door. Pop in a strip of fabric, wallpaper or even wrapping paper toned to your bathroom and it will look great. Easy, cheap way to get lots of storage. e. Similar to Pebbles reply, and combingin your response, something like the Ikea Grundtal shelf unit (with the stainless finish) may look a little more suited in the bathroom.
