Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Oct 24, 2007 11:00 am Hiya all,
Time for more free advice from someone who has been there and done that... I am looking at a modest bathroom renovation (vanity, mirror and shower screen) and was trying to assess what could be done by me and what I would need to get a tradesman in do to. As well as a few other q's. First question, the vanity and tapware will be replaced. The current pipes are fixed seperate hot and cold. I want to replace with a mixer that comes with two flexible hot and cold attachment. Do i need to get a plumber in to cut the current pipes and attach the new flexible feeds to the mixer or could I realistically do them. The 'MAN' at the store looked at me, instantly assessed my plumbing skills and said get a professional in to do it. Only problem with that is I have two other bathroom I want to do based on the success of this one and there are no other plumbing jobs needed in the bathroom. Secondly, I want to replace the wall mirror approx 1000x800mm and was wondering how this is likely to be attached to the wall. Its flush up against the wall and there's no tiles behind it. Will there be a bracket onto the wall? The only other time I've seen the mirror replaced the whole dry-wall was coming down with, something I want to avoid. Any other advise on this would be helpful. Do the current taps come out of the wall above the basin? If so, yes, get a plumber to relocate the tap fittings in the wall. They can be lowered to the inside of the vanity. Then you can attach flexible pipes to the mixer in the vanity later once it's installed. If the current pipes are at low level and have solid metal lines to the taps, then you should be able to undo the solid lines from the wall. Cap them, install vanity, then connect flexible lines. A picture of what is there would be helpful here. Quote: Secondly, I want to replace the wall mirror approx 1000x800mm and was wondering how this is likely to be attached to the wall. More than likely the mirror will lift up and off brackets on the wall. As long as there's no tiles/grout/sealer up against the miror frame. Re: Bathroom Reno... what can be done yourself 3Oct 24, 2007 12:38 pm Hi cfham, we have renovated a few houses and renovated our ensuite by ourselves in our last house. The builder quoted over $14K for 3m x 3.5m space!!!! and we did it for under $7K. That is with subcontracting out the plumbing and tiling work too. Hubby did the plastering and waterproofing & painting we had the wall mounted vanity custom made and we installed that to. We had Stegbar install the shower screen and mirror.
I thought that most mixers require flaring and welding of the copper tube during installation. Unless you can get one that has the screw ends. Get a quote and see how much it is to do by a plumber and weigh up your options. It might not be worth the worry of doing it yourself. In regards to the mirror. Is it glued onto the wall? Could be difficult or should i say messy getting it off without damaging the plaster. If it's an old fashioned home, you can get a gilt framed mirror and attach it onto the wall to hide any damage. (Did that in my first reno). I've also seen on one of those TV reno shows that you can run a length of wire between the wall and the mirror to remove it from the wall...starting at the top and pulling the wire down slowly to cut through any adhesive holding it to the wall. But be gentle... otherwise 7 yrs bad luck.... Good Luck! The DIY project can be broken into two major steps. Planning and Design and Construction. Both of these steps are as important as one another to ensure you give… 0 3611 ![]() Hello It is good to have a planned bathroom reno to suit your budget and design, living for 10 years I think you need a bathtub 4 6417 I work with owner, he/she is my man on the ground and I instruct them when to visit the site and take photos and I have other tools in the bag. 4 2509 ![]() |
