Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 May 20, 2010 7:40 am We have found the exact tiles we want for our renovation (2 bathrooms and laundry) in a tile outlet store for less than half price of previous quotes I am hoping someone has advice on using seconds tiles? We wont be saving a huge amount of $ so I don't wont to risk it if it will cause any issues with the tiling Thanks! ************* First time renovator VIC Re: Would you use seconds tiles for your house? 2May 20, 2010 7:44 am The better the tiler laying the tiles... the less the quality of the tiles matter. A good tiler will pick the tiles that should be laid next to each other to deal with the uneveness that makes a tile end up as a 2nd. An average tiler will take them off the pile and put down on the floor no matter how bumpy they will end up. Re: Would you use seconds tiles for your house? 4May 21, 2010 2:15 pm You need to clarify what you mean by seconds. I am sure tiles can be seconds for many reasons. tiles that are second because they are out of square or are not perfectly flat are a waste of time imho especially if they are rectified tiles. Hope it helps Cherie These were in a huge tile liquidator shop where it seems most if not all tiles were marked seconds thanks for info everyone ************* First time renovator VIC Re: Would you use seconds tiles for your house? 6May 21, 2010 4:57 pm Are they a patterned tile or just plain? If they are patterned it is advised to buy them from the same "Batch" in case of colour variations and buy extra from the same batch just in case you run our - you don't want one corner in a room to look a shade lighter or darker because you ran short by one box of tiles. I don't have any issues buying seconds if they are a plain colour. I used seconds in my bathroom and they are great. I was told that they are lighter than the usual batches so they had to be seconds. they also said that if there was something 'wrong' with them then they actually wouldn't be able to sell them. so i just made sure i bought enough spares because the risk is that i won't be able to match the colour batch again Re: Would you use seconds tiles for your house? 8May 25, 2010 11:07 am Not in Brighton East, people buying into that area now are fussy and are looking for a good quality finish to a home. If you are strapped for money, it becomes a problem but think carefully about the type of cosmetic finish. 2nds mean, different colours, waves or bumps, chipped corners, discontinued batch etc. Re: Would you use seconds tiles for your house? 9May 25, 2010 11:10 am thanks all for your replies since it isnt a massive amount of money we shall go with firsts far too many other things to worry about ...... ************* First time renovator VIC Thanks mate.
