Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry Re: Tiled Shower Recess for holding shampoo etc, etc 21Oct 04, 2007 12:23 am thanks for that information. so they should also be able to do them on a solid brick internal wall? I assume they will just need some sort of support / lintel above to support weight of bricks above....... does that sound right?
Helen Re: Tiled Shower Recess for holding shampoo etc, etc 22Oct 04, 2007 8:36 am If your internal walls are double brick, I can't see why not.
If they are single brick you would need to ensure the wall behind was sheeted with something, as the sheeing forms he backing for the niche. I would treat it like a window opening in an external brick wall (ie downstairs window of a 2 story brick home) or like a garage door opening. With the traditional (east coast) brick veneer house; The reason they do them on an internal wall, is the rear face of the wall sheet behind becomes the back of the niche. A noggin crosses between 2 studs to form the top & bottom. If you were to have a wider one that is longer than the gap between 2 studs (which I reckon is great) then I dare say they would treat it like a window opening with a beam across the top to support the stud that is cut. It can't be done easily to an external wall, as there is no sheet wall behind it to act as backing, and there's an air ga between the frame and the bricks. I'm just thinking though, that If they planned ahead, and fixed a sheet to the framework before the bricks went up, the there's a chance you could have it on an external wall. I would also suggest maybe a mirrored backing (or a small mirror affixed to the back of the niche) Re: Tiled Shower Recess for holding shampoo etc, etc 23Oct 06, 2007 9:26 pm penjay For example, I added ducted vacuuming at the last moment and fortunately I was trawling around the internet and discovered the dutpan thing you can have added in the kitchen. PD never mentioned that it was an option with the ducted vacuuming. There must be millions of examples like that. Sorry to hijack, MM, but... Penjay, would you mind explaining the dustpan thing in the kitchen you can have? I'm getting ducted vacuum and have not heard of this, sounds like something I should be asking for?? Thanks Re: Tiled Shower Recess for holding shampoo etc, etc 24Oct 06, 2007 10:17 pm Oh the dustpan!!
