Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 May 12, 2010 4:17 pm I would like to know if the gas hot water system has to be installed IN the bathroom. Let's say, I was to have a small bathroom downstairs for guests and an ensuite for the Master upstairs on opposite sites. Should I have two hot water systems or could that be like a 250L installed in the basement of the house or a battery room (for solar power) or do I have to have one in each bathroom? Thank you so much! Regards, Mel Re: Location of hot water system 2May 12, 2010 4:29 pm Hot water systems are generally designed to be outside. One 250lt tank with a 20lt booster solar unit would be fine for a 3 bed house with 2 adults and a couple of kids with 1 bathroom and 1 ensuite. 315lt if you like 2 showers a day or 400lt for a larger family. you could also get temperature control unit installed. in most cases you will only ever need one unit for any residential home. You need to run a flue to the atmosphere, thats why they are mostly installed outside. The formula for the size you need is 50 liters per person. but thats generally used with off peak electric, with 250liters being the minimum. (there is no 250liter gas hot water unit) Gas is somewhat different in that they heat up quickly and are not on an off peak tariff. 130 ltre (produces 280 liter in the first hour) is adequate for a family of four. A 160 liter produces 360 in the first hour. But an instantaneous would be better if you have gas. 26lter per minute for a family of four should be ok. you only pay for what you use and unlike the instantaneous units of years ago, they have no problems with pressure. the unit should be located as close to the areas that you use most. IE. main bathroom and kitchen (although today, most kitchens have a dishwasher which lessens the demand for hot water there. If you have two bathrooms that are miles apart, then you need to decide which one you want to wait the longest for hot water, as they willbe a delay accompanied by heat loss to the most remote bathroom, , where climatic conditions might dictate that your gas hot water units have to be inside the building, if this is the case you should have your hot water unit or as you noted install two hot water units. If you have a rarely used bathroom on the other side of the house, it may be better to install a second hot water unit with its own system of pipes. As you mention, battery room and basement, im guessing that you may be from outside of australia where climatic conditions might dictate that your gas hot water units have to be inside the building. if this is the case you should have your hot water unit installed in the basement close to the bathroom you use most, taking into consideration if its gas it needs to have flue (a pipe to remove the poisonous exhaust gases) the sun master is the solar heating to "warm" the water in the tank the S26 is your hot water system which will heat the water (25 degrees?) so with both turned on you… 2 14059 Thanks good to know. How big is your tank? So you can set when your heat pump runs? How do you do that? How's the speed to heat? Is there such thing as instantaneous… 4 1036 I want to build a decking to the drawn shape outlined in black. The problem is how close can I build to the gas hot water unit?
