Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Apr 12, 2010 1:16 am After reading a few posts on here, i have got the impression that any drilling into the tiles will affect the waterproofing?!?!? How, then, do you go about having any shelving to put shampoo, soap or whatever on?! What do you use? Thanks! Re: Shower shelving & waterproofing - how? 2Apr 12, 2010 9:01 am Hi Em, you can get those ones with suction. There are some threads about this, like: http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=19823&start My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Shower shelving & waterproofing - how? 3Apr 12, 2010 9:26 am thankyou for your swift response . D day as been brought forward and I don't want to make any mistakes that i might regret.
thanks again edited to ask: surely when shower screen is added after tiling, there is drilling and screws? and what about the rail showers, are they not screwed into wall? sorry, complete gumby here. Just curious! Re: Shower shelving & waterproofing - how? 4Apr 12, 2010 9:28 am ps we have to move a powerpoint as we are getting a larger vanity with 2 sinks. Any suggestions as to where to put it? I have been scouring photos of bathrooms but rarely see one. Low , high, just under mirror? against the wall, in between the two sinks (must be a danger??). For ease, it would be easiest to move it further left and have it just left of the vanity, but at what height? thanks. Re: Shower shelving & waterproofing - how? 5Apr 12, 2010 10:46 am I think re. adding shower screens after tiling - this should be builder's worry (and responsibility). We haven't progressed this far yet, so can't offer any real advice. Re. powerpoint - there are rules as to how far (vertically and horizontally) they should be from taps. We placed ours on the side walls. I personally wouldn't put them anywhere within the vanity edge vertical line, I can't see a need for it (unless you have no other wall space at all and side walls are far away). A pic of your plans would also be good My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Shower shelving & waterproofing - how? 6Apr 12, 2010 1:42 pm Re powerpoints You could put some inside your vanity. I've also heard of someone putting one behind the drawer, and their hair dryer was in the drawer, so everyone they just lifted it out and used it, rather than having to pug it in too. I have a double vanity, and just put on on each side. So yes, putting the point between the 2 basins could be illegal! You can't help but drill through the tiles and waterproofing membrane when installing your fittings. What you could try doing is after drilling through and inserting the green plug, fill the hole with silicone, and then screw as per normal. Spray a bit of soapy water over the silicone and surround efore removing excess silicone from area good luck Adrien Re: Shower shelving & waterproofing - how? 9Apr 14, 2010 1:14 pm How about we use Polyurethanes and not silicone. They last way better and user friendly too. Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Shower shelving & waterproofing - how? 10Apr 16, 2010 7:15 pm Sorry if I seem to be hijacking a thread, but Onc, could you please write a bit more about silicon and polyurethane? I read a quote from a guy in an article in Renew a while back saying that ideally there would be no silicon in a modern home. I didn't understand it , but I did tuck it away in one of the few spare brain cells I have left to spare. Your comment reminded me. I'm particularly interested in whether there are any environmental concerns ... including, but not only, concerns for home air quality etc. Are water based polyurethanes up to the task of sealing up bathrooms?? Thanks in anticipation. e. Re: Shower shelving & waterproofing - how? 11Apr 17, 2010 2:35 pm Polyurethane jointing compounds stick better and remain soft for longer... Everyone has seen the mould growing underneath silicone. I have used them(poly) for years with plenty of success. Most cars are stuck together with polyurethanes.(parts thereof) Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Strong enough for what? For linen, absolutely. To climb on, no.
