Tub in Basement?

I am a first time home owner & recently purchased a tiny 611 sq. ft. bungalow, the bathroom on the main floor is way too small so I was condering just leaving the toilet and sink & moving the tub to the basement, but I have never seen a tub in a basement, can this be done? Or is there a reason I have never seen it done? I realise it would have to be raised a bit to allow for proper drainage, other than that?

Congratulations on your new purchase.
I can't offer any sound advise on the bath tub to move in the basement as I've never seen this done before.
I just wanted to say though that it may make it a little hard when it comes to re-sale time.

Definiatly an issue with drainage - water doesn'' like to run uphill - basements have ahabit of getting cold and damp on their own - let alone with a tub in there :shock:

And you would have to put in a pump in - then think about the double effort of taking things down there to wash etc, and then..... when they are wet and heavy - carrying them back up !!

But it'd keep you fit

I did know we had basements……I don’t think I’ve seen a home with one!

Plenty of wine basements……for the winos!!

I am actually living in a basement flat at the moment while we are building. there are lots of problems with salt damp, it gets freezing in winter (nice and cool in summer though) and when we use a tap we haven't used for a while (ie; the bath taps; not because we don't bathe often but because we normally shower :wink:

) there is a strong smell of stale water. we also had a burst sewage pump last valentine's day which smelt a lot worse than stale water and took a lot of dry retching before it was cleaned up. so, I guess I have some first hand experience that basements aren't great places for wet areas. great in theory but they haven't been so good in practice

Maylands - Id suggest that your in an old basement - which is not as nice as a new basement. Think of any underground carpark - that's a modern basement.
But I lived in a house in the UK for 2 years with a basement and the trick was to leave a heater on that kept it dry and the wamr rose into the house and my house in the hils had an old 1880's cream storage basement - and yep a great place to hide on hot SA summers day

hi yakchat,
we are on the same page, I also leave the heater on during winter to try and dry it out. the basement flat is in an old house but it was newly done. it is more the darkness and disorientation that comes with a basement flat that I don't like. we get dressed in the morning in jeans and a jumper and then go outside to find it is boiling hot!! no windows to look out of can be very disorienting!
