Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Apr 04, 2010 10:31 pm Hi guys, need some feedback on what I am trying to do. Idea is to use hydronic heating systems under tiles to keep floor worm in winter months. Disc: Application in townhouse, bathrooms on second floor. Have 350L Solar, plenty of hot water (estimate 60% more that we use). Want to run cooper 13mm piping under tiles when bathroom is renowated, in runs every 20sm covering whole floor area. Flow thru the pipes controlled via 3-way manual valve, when floor heating needed, valve opened and water first will travel thru pipe arrangement before reaching shover/taps in bathroom. When valve of in oposite position, hot water will by-pass floar heating and flows as 'normal'. Pros: - floor heats up using 'free' heat provided by SOLAR - heating up whyle taking shover of using sink - thermal energy released will reduce load on heating via air conditioning system Cons: - operate only when there is water flowing, so cannot pre-heat - added thikness to floor due to 13mm cooper tubing - will take longer for hot water to reach shover due to longer pipe and thermal enertia of concrete slab (even thin 15mm slab). - estimated water 'waste' due to cooling during opening the tap and hot water delivery is about 10liters, every time you use hot water Re: hydronic heating systems for bathroom floors 2Apr 30, 2010 10:53 am g'day have you thought about an electrical alternative? there are heating matts that you lay underneath the tiles, these matts are connected to a timer/ switch etc.. they take about 5mins to get warm. THe beauty with these are you can set the timer to start up heating at 6.00 am and turn itself off at 9.00! google them hope this helped Electrical - Automation - Smart wiring - New homes - Commercial - Data cabling] 1300 050 315 www.cenemelectrical.com.au www.facebook.com/cenemelectrical Re: hydronic heating systems for bathroom floors 3Apr 30, 2010 12:37 pm youre prposing something that will only half work at the best of times. ive installed lots of central heating systems in northern europe and when lines are laid in the floor they are controlled by a thermostat and are on a dedicated central heating system that has flow and return lines that circulate from a heat exchanger or boiler. what youre proposing wont heat the floor up until you run water through the shower and unless your showers are long, will hardly be noticable, unless you put a circulation pump on the branch to the bathroom, in which case the efficiency of your hot water system will be compromised. Thanks mate, this is what I wondering. Does anyone have a suggestion for a good hydronic in slab heating speacialist who may be able to help me with an existing system and wether or not it may need a seperator… 0 4883 Currently renovating, and our main lounge is 5m x 10m, with a cathedral roof peaking at 6.5m high.
