Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Mar 25, 2010 1:46 pm Hi all, We recently had our bathroom renovated and we're really happy with the overall job, but one thing that isnt quite right is the mirror. The mirror is approx. 1.5 wide by 0.80 high and meant that the tiles above the mirror had to be cut to get the mirror at the right height. Unfortunately there are problems with the cutting and laying of the tiles above the mirror. The edges of the tiles have little chips along it. (is it impossible to cut a ceramic white tile perfectly ?) and also the tiles do not all sit flush so when the mirror was installed it was really obvious that some tiles were sticking out slightly. Now I wasnt happy so I called the bathroom reno place and they've looked at it and agreed that it's not right. I thought they might be able to knock the current tiles out, recut (properly) some new ones and lay them level this time. Seems that isnt a solution (maybe because there's a risk of doing more damage?). The solution they have is to order a new mirror that's slightly bigger than the current one so that it sits on top of the existing mirror. OK that fixes the tile problem because the cut edges would be covered, but then we lose the nice flush look and have a visible edge. I'm also concerned that they wont get the mirror level due to the underlying tiles but they said its ok because we'll be using some strong double sided tape to stick the new mirror to the old one so it will sit out ever so slightly and they'll use clear silicon to seal it all. Hmmm , did you say Double Sided Tape ?? Any thoughts on what our options are ? They're obviously going for the cheaper option because I'm guessing making and installing a new mirror over the top is both cheaper and easier than taking tiles off, cutting them perfectly and laying them well. But does that make it the right way to go ? Edit : Perhaps if they want to place a mirror so it isn’t flush we should get them to remove the old mirror and lay full tiles so at least the mirror sits on top of a full wall of mirrors instead of mirror on mirror. and at least if we ever need to replace it, the tiling it already done? OR maybe just remove the cut tiles and make a mirror to up up to the next whole mirror ? That will mean that the mirror goes up to 2.3 or one tile down from the ceiling. Cheers in advance Re: Bathroom Mirror Problems 2Mar 25, 2010 7:42 pm Sounds like the tiler did a poor job, which he should be punished for! At that height what is it lining up with ,the shower screen? If you get them to remove upper tiles, maybe go all the way to the ceiling with the mirror? That probably would be the best option. Because it might look a bit funny if the mirror will be at a random height. Although, if you are happy to accept new mirror over the top, I wouldnt bother getting them to remove the existing mirror and tiling the whole wall, just to cover it up with a bigger mirror. Good luck! Have had a few issues with out recently done bathroom floor.
