Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jan 04, 2006 6:06 pm Hi
We are trying to tidy up our wooden house cheaply. The toilet is separate from the bath & shower. When the toilet was installed in the 1950s the building regulation in NZ apparently specified that the outlet pipe had to be in concrete from floor level to ground level, so our sewage outflow is stuck in the middle of a huge concrete pillar right down to ground level underneath the house. The concrete seems to form the base of the (very small) room where the toilet is, although the rest of the house has wooden floors. Because it is so old the floor and toilet surrounds have a really bad urine smell. We have had a plumber and a bathroom renovator come to look, because we initially thought the toilet must be leaking, but they both said it seems fine and probably the smell has just sunk into the lino and concrete underneath it from 'near misses' on the loo over 40-50 years. We will need to replace the toilet if we can find one that fits (apparently need exactly the same size and orientation because the concrete means that can't be easily changed, although we do have to fix where they recessed the cistern into the wall because apparently it's non-compliant). The bathroom guy suggested jackhammering off the top 5-10cm of concrete and reconcreting it to get rid of the odour from the floor, then laying new vinyl. This wouldn't fit our limited budget as we'd have to hire someone to do it, so I was wondering, if we can remove the lino is there any type of concrete sealant that a) could be applied to old concrete, b) would block odours and c) wouldn't interefere with the adhesion of new vinyl to the floor? Also could anyone recommend suppliers from Waikato north for compact floor standing toilets at a reasonable price that we could just get a plumber to install for us? Thanks. Re: Smelly concrete floor around toilet 2Jan 22, 2006 7:50 am Hi Kiwikat,
Mitre10 sells nice compact toilets with porcelain cistern for just under NZ$ 200. To get rid of your smell you could tile your toilet floor. Don't forget the underlay (cement sheets) good luck! Re: Smelly concrete floor around toilet 3Jan 22, 2006 7:53 am Hi Kiwikat,
If your whole toilet floor is concrete you can tile straight onto the concrete. good luck! I have a toilet that blocks up on the top (2nd) floor of a property. The toilets on the 1st and ground floor are OK) Blockage clears when the using a plunger. But… 0 480 Grab a hose, insert it at the top of the inlet/down pipe and turn the water on and see where the water is escaping from. Then you'll know. 3 8454 Looking at some of the designs on websites, they are all selling very similar products. I get that you want something stylish. It's worth looking for search terms like SaveH2O… 2 6989 |
