Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Mar 12, 2010 9:47 pm Ok, well, we need a new hot water system, and we assumed we'd just replace our leaking one with a new one of the same capacity (250 litres). Firstly, is 250 litres a lot? A friend said it was. It's only the 2 of us in our apartment, who have a total of 2 showers a day, use the dishwasher about 3 times a week on the 30 minute eco cycle, and use the washing machine maybe 2 times a week and usually on the cold water only cycle. The reason I ask this is it turns out we literally cannot fit a 250 litre capacity tank in the place our existing one is. They're too wide, and we can't move the WALL and built in vanity sink unit apart to accommodate the new larger tanks. So we're considering a smaller capacity one. We're looking at an Aquamax one that is a bit less than half our existing capacity, and is much narrower but actually 20cm taller than our existing tank, so we will still need to have something done about the cupboard top that houses it, but at least it'll fit. But is this smaller capacity enough for our needs? We don't want to go through all this and then find out we're stuck with cold showers or something! Also, why oh WHY do they insist on making new hot water systems BIGGER than older ones!? People's living spaces are SHRINKING, not growing!! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Hot water system tank sizes & capacities 2Mar 12, 2010 9:52 pm Hi grace_slick, I think it should be OK. They say the rule of thumb is 50lt per person in the household. We have a 250lt tank with 6 people...2 adults and 4 kids aged 5-13...and we hardly ever run out of water, so you'd think a smaller system would be fine for the 2 of you. 'chelle We have a hand-over date...15/10...but I won't hold my breath! http://people-in-glass-houses.blogspot.com/ Re: Hot water system tank sizes & capacities 3Mar 13, 2010 8:43 am Most home units have a 50 liter unit. Townhouses, 80 or 125 liters. 50 liters is enough for a 8 min shower at best, but they do recover quickly and ther.es hot water again after 10 minutes. after that theres an 80 liter, then a 125 litr.e 160liter and then a 250 liter. Anything over 250 is usually on off peak. perhaps youd be better off with an 80 or 125 liter. a dux 80 liter is 925 highx 490 wide and the 125 is 1062 high x 532 wide Unfortunately, dux is the only brand i have the dimensions for, but it might give you an idea of the space you need but i wouldnt recommend putting one in. I change over lots of hot water units and many of the dux units are only a year out of warranty when they burst. And they arent making hot water units bigger. The sizes have been the standard for many years and in fact, the overall dimensions are actually smaller now than they were years ago as the insulation takes up less space, making them actually a little smaller than they once were. If youre worried about running out of hot water get one with a 3.6 kw element. it will heat up even quicker. Rheem is the best by far, but the price reflects this. Aquamax are more reasonably priced and are the units i usually install. A 250 liter unit in an apartment would be an overkill for two people. An 80 liter or 125 liter unit should be more than adequate for two people. Like the previous poster wrote, 50 liters per person is the formula.Although, Dux reccomend an 80 liter for 2 adults and one child. The same could be said for the other brands. By the way, your dishwasher is hooked up to the cold water, or at least it should be. There are very few dishwashers that can be hooked up to hot water Re: Hot water system tank sizes & capacities 4Mar 13, 2010 4:56 pm We had 125L in our townhouse, two adults. Was just enogh, but I like my long showers... Had problem when put it on timer to turn the power ON only when we were home (to save on electricity). Saved 20% on power bill but in winter did run out of water few times. Now have 350L 40 Tubes HILLS solar. 6 days of nonstop rain and still have hot water Re: Hot water system tank sizes & capacities 5Mar 13, 2010 5:50 pm Oh GOOD, thank you for that! Excellent. I'm gonna ask the plumber about a 125 litre one now...I'm pretty sure they're now talking about a 160. I think 125 would be great for us, and it may actually FIT! Incidentally, this is what they said about the 160 litre one... 160lt Aquamax supply & installed $ 1106-00. Height 1600mm Width 487mm Our cupboard is only 1400mm high and is 600mm wide.
