Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jan 31, 2010 2:36 pm We want some niches in our bathroom and ensuite, but our designer didnt put them on the pans and said for us to make the adjustments as we're building (OB). But I dont know whats required for a niche So I was wondering if anyone has=d any pictures of their niche in construction/progress that I could look at and work out what we need to do to get it to happen? COMPLETELY .. and now we're too late .. they've been gyprocked .. sniff! .. I guess we'll live without it .. put some nice holder rack or something! --- I don't have a signature - just this sentence saying that I don't have one - that'll do! Re: Shampoo niches - construction/progress pics? 5Feb 01, 2010 10:45 am Do you know how wide your frame is and if they will be adding an extra "wall stud" or whatever the proper term is? (as in, was your bathroom disadvantaged or the room on the other side of the wall)? Also, did they only thicken the wall for the width of the shower or that whole (bathroom) wall? (as in, was your bathroom disadvantaged or the room on the other side of the wall)? Also, did they only thicken the wall for the width of the shower or that whole (bathroom) wall? The wall was just designed to be thicker - it's how the display home was, so I'm not 100% sure which side the space might have been taken from with each of them. In our ensuite, one of the WIRs is on the other side; in the kitchen, the niche backs onto the linen cupboard in the hallway; and in the bathroom, it's against a section of the rumpus room wall that's recessed anyway. It's only an extra 90mm anyway, so not a big deal. Looking at the framing pics, they're both wrong. I think those were some of the photos I took to document the numerous mistakes the framer had made. This is a better one, after it had been corrected: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ It's a bit hard to tell, but it's a double stud wall - the length of the entire wall is only about 1.8m anyway, so there's very little space lost overall. Re: Shampoo niches - construction/progress pics? 8Feb 01, 2010 5:39 pm Just make sure that the shower niche is high enough to take your large bottles of shampoo or shower gel ESPECIALLY if you use the pump bottles. We didn't think of this & now our 750ml pump bottles sit on the floor grrrrr Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Shampoo niches - construction/progress pics? 9Feb 01, 2010 9:14 pm kek In our ensuite, one of the WIRs is on the other side; in the kitchen, the niche backs onto the linen cupboard in the hallway; and in the bathroom, it's against a section of the rumpus room wall that's recessed anyway. That now makes sense. Thanks kek. All our bathrooms are probably too tight to have them shrunk by another 90cm Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I guess we could have a skinny niche in the ensuite tho (on the wall where the walk through robe is) ? But definitivelly not in bathroom 1 or 2. Boooo hooo! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I'm so devo. Was really looking forward to having niches in all showers Re: Shampoo niches - construction/progress pics? 10Feb 02, 2010 6:43 am It's only an extra 9cm, not 90....look at it on a ruler, it's hardly anything. You seem to have plenty of room in your ensuite, and I think you could squeeze one into the bathroom too, if you make it a bit narrower. It will depend where the taps are going too. Ours are all 180mm deep (that's frame size - it's a bit less with the Gyprock on), which is the width of two pieces of framing timber, but you can go skinnier than that. Some builders do them within a single stud wall... I can fit quite large vases in ours - in a shower niche, you only need it wide enough for shampoo bottles and soap etc. Whatever size they are, just remember that when you plaster, then tile over the surfaces, you lose space, so factor that into the dimensions. Re: Shampoo niches - construction/progress pics? 11Feb 02, 2010 9:31 am Thanks everyone! We have niches in our hallway which is drawn on our plan, so I was worried about not having the bathroom ones drawn - but looks like it would be something we could easily add Southies, thanks for the tip! I usually buy 1ltr bottles so I should probably go and measure them now Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Oooops. I stuffed up my cm and mm Our wall frames are 75mm so a double wall will be 150mm. Will need to measure my 1.5L bottles to see how thick they are. *Fingers crossed* 8 6156 5 6823 DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair That laser level looks lovely!
