Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jan 29, 2010 10:11 pm Hi Guys, I am now in the process of putting the plan together for the bathroom reno. I'll project manage myself but I'm wondering if I got the stuff in the right order and I have allocated the right skill/people to the task. Since it's my first reno I'd appreciate any feedback. The project is currently a large bathroom (approx. 4m x 3m) and will be a separation to an ensuite and smaller bathroom (so need additional internal wall, internal door, and external window for Ensuite). Remove and replace toilet, bath, basin > Handyman (0.5 day) Demolition / Strip-out (with pipes sealed) > Handyman (1 day) Rough Carpentry > Handyman (2 day) Building works: Demolish internal wall for door > Handyman (1 day) Building works: Demolish external wall for window > Handyman (1 day) Building works: New Door > Door Professional (??) Building works: New Window > Window Professional (??) Building works: Drywall (Ensuite separation) with wall enforcement > Carpenter (2 days) Building works: Drywall small (Toilet separator) > Carpenter (1 day) Building works: Finishing off interior walls and drying > Carpenter (1 day) Fit-out for shower, vanity, bathtub and toilet > Carpenter (1 day) Plumbing Rough-In (move services and add to wall) > Plumber (2 day) Drainage for new shower > Plumber (0.5 day) Electrical: Rewiring of new wall > Electrician (0.3 day) Electrical: Rewiring of old bathroom > Electrician (0.3 day) Electrical: Ceiling Downlights Ensuite > Electrician (0.3 day) Finish Wall > Carpenter (1 day) Plastering and waterproofing > Plasterer (1 day) Tiling Bathroom > Tiler (2 day) Tiling Ensuite > Tiler (1 day) Tiling Shower Ensuite > Tiler (0.5 day) Final plumbing > Plumber (1 day) Shower screen installation > Handyman (0.5 day) Vanity and bench top installation > Handyman (0.5 day) Tap installation > Handyman (0.5 day) Painting > Painter (1 day) Correct any problems (1.5 day) Thanks, JM Re: Bathroom renovation - tasks, order, skills required 2Jan 29, 2010 11:06 pm Quote: Remove and replace toilet, bath, basin > Handyman (0.5 day) I'd think that the toilet, bath and basin would be removed on Day 1 but the new ones wouldn't go in till nearer the end. If you are tiling the floor, then the new toilet would go in after that? I'm doing my bathroom reno later this year. I have bought all the stuff myself but using a bathroom company to organise the trades. Here's a rough schedule they gave me - THE SCHEDULE Day 1 - will involve disconnecting existing plumbing and any electricals. The room will be dismantled completely, all fitting taken out, tiles removed from floor and walls etc. Day 2 - the licensed plumber will run all his pipe work for the new fittings. The electrician will complete his prewiring for electricals Day 3 - walls and floors screeded and patched Day 4 - hobs and walls built, brick ups built and any other construction work Day 5 - Water proofing etc Day 6, 7 & 8 - Tiling (depending on the amount of tiling required) Day 9 - Fitting of all fixtures and polishing Day 10 - Reconnection of plumbing & electrical Your screens and mirrors will then be measured and fitted by the glazier I'm thinking mine will take more than the 10 days quoted, probably more like 15. Re: Bathroom renovation - tasks, order, skills required 3Jan 30, 2010 7:18 am I agree with Scozzy - I wouldn't be installing new fittings until further down the track. There's way too much risk of damage to your shiny new stuff. Of course, if you only have one bathroom and you're living in the house, that might be a problem... The rest looks pretty right. I assume you're ripping out floor tiles too? You probably want to do that before wall frames or plastering are done. It's not a nice job either. One other thing you may need to consider is whether there is existing electical wiring in walls to be demolished. If so, you may need an electrician to move cables and make them safe until the new power points and lights go in. We were lucky to have a handyman doing our demolition work who was also a B-grade electrician, so that wasn't an issue for us. Re: Bathroom renovation - tasks, order, skills required 4Jan 30, 2010 7:29 am Electrician will need to come twice, the first time before plastering is done to get the wiring put in and then will also need to come again after tiling is completed to connect everything. You might have to check whether an electrician needs to come during demolition too. I can't remember if we had the electrician come two or three times. I am new to this forum so please bear with me.
