Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jan 23, 2010 10:40 pm Hi Guys .. we've been asked to select the tiling for our bathrooms + laundry .. wanted to ask if you guys: - went with a lighter or a darker floor (and why?) - went with a similar wall tile or contrasting .. - try to match it with your floor tiling or carpet .. and why or not .. We're kind of confused which of these are important to weigh others off .. any help or pictures would be appreciated --- I don't have a signature - just this sentence saying that I don't have one - that'll do! Re: Bathroom tile selection .. what did you choose/have? 2Jan 24, 2010 11:28 am Hi bluemetal77 I completely understand what you mean about trying to 'coordinate' the tiles, etc!!! I just went through the process yesterday and if it wasn't for the knowledgeable, patient salesman, I'd still be in there. Basically both my husband and I decided we preferred the classic grey, black and white tones instead of the chocolate/mocha themes that seem to be going around now. I picked the flooring first as that would usually be the last thing ripped up if people wanted to 'update' the look of their home, so things like tiling, paintwork, even doors are all easier to change/modify, etc. You'll be able to see the choices I've made on my blog, but definitely try to keep the same theme going across all wet areas. Don't forget you can get coloured grout as well! Keep to the 60/30/10 ratio i.e. 60% of the colour is usually in the cupboard colours - 30% in the tiling (you might want to consider a small section of 'feature' tiling) - 10% for the benchtops, which isn't a bad thing as that in itself could be the feature...you'll understand when you see the pics on our blog. If you want to make a bathroom appear bigger, you don't necessarily have to go for the lighter colours. Why not 'extend' the darker tiles right up to top of your shower height and elongate the room per se. By all means I am NO expert, but I did a lot of research and my original turquoise green theme had to be compromised as it was too avant garde for the Australian market at the moment - another words what's 'in' in Europe won't be 'in' Oz for another 6 months Good luck with your choices. Don't EVER be afraid to ask lots of questions! Final piece of advice (enter no expert disclaimer again ) choose for yourselves and not for resale value. It's your home, so you want to be able to enjoy it! I went with a darker floor tile (grey). I'm a brunette and detest how easily you can see my hair on white/light tiles. Plus darker tiles = darker grout. Which is an added bonus when it comes to cleaning. I can remember as a teenager, my parents had terracotta tiles throughout their living area (it was the 90's ). White terracotta isn't the lightest colour, the grout was a light creamy/white... it was the bane of my mother's existence keeping it clean! - went with a similar wall tile or contrasting .. I went with white wall tiles, but my bathroom is tiny - so I wanted to try and maximise the space and ensure it didn't feel too cramped. - try to match it with your floor tiling or carpet .. and why or not .. I didn't match it with my carpet / flooring specifically, but when I started my renovations I decided that I would be looking toward grey tones as opposed to browns. I have carpet in my bedrooms which is a soft grey colour, I don't think I've ever put a bathroom tile next to the carpet to see if they work together - but as part of the overall place I think I've achieved a cohesive look. I have some pictures on my blog here: http://vintagemodernhome.blogspot.com/2 ... hroom.html I've just started writing a blog Re: Bathroom tile selection .. what did you choose/have? 4Jan 26, 2010 7:39 am bluemetal77 Hi Guys .. we've been asked to select the tiling for our bathrooms + laundry .. wanted to ask if you guys: - went with a lighter or a darker floor (and why?) - went with a similar wall tile or contrasting .. - try to match it with your floor tiling or carpet .. and why or not .. We're kind of confused which of these are important to weigh others off .. any help or pictures would be appreciated There's no right answer - and what will or won't work will depend on your particular house design as well as your personal taste. Lighter colours give the illusion of space, so they can be handy to use if the rooms are small. And don't forget that unless you're tiling all the way up all walls, you'll also have the paint colour to work in with. Have a look at photos on the web or in magazines, or go visit some display homes that you love and see what kind of look you want. When you find a style you love, take note of the features - woodgrain laminates, tiled features (where?) luxury wallpaper features, large tiles/small tiles/mosaics and so on - and then you can begin to look for similar styles and colours in laminates and tiles etc. If you're restricted to one paint colour throughout the house, I'd start with that. I wanted a different colour in our bathrooms, so paid extra to have our bathrooms painted a different colour. Get the largest colour sample you can of your chosen paint colour and take it with you when looking at tiles. It's pointless choosing beautiful tile selections and then discovering that they don't go with your paint colour.... I started with pale green walls - I wanted a clean and fairly simple look, but knew I wanted some small areas of feature tiles. So I chose a large dark browny-grey floor tile, and continued it up the shower walls. The main tiles and the vanity cabinet (Formica Mocha) were quite dark colours, so I went for a light benchtop. Then I added in a strip of pebbles in the shower and a dark feature splashback behind the vanity. There were some budgetary restraints too - I would have loved stone benchtops the same as in the kitchen, but the price was too high, so I picked a stone-look laminate instead. We also made a point of picking our main tile from among the builder's standard range. That let us have more expensive upgrades for our feature tiles. Since they were small areas, the cost was only an extra $500. We took our time at the tile selection appointment and laid the tile samples we were considering out with the paint and laminate samples. That easily ruled out quite a few - some just looked wrong... I've carried a colour scheme through from the master bedroom to the ensuite. We have a dull green feature wall in our room, and the paler green in the ensuite flows nicely from that. The brown and stone colours also co-ordinate well with carpet, furniture and linen. Our second bathroom has the same selections, except for the splashback - we just wanted to make the two rooms slightly different, so went for a pale green glass tile for the splashback in there. The laundry was a bit less important, so no paint or tile upgrades in there. I carried the same cabinet and benchtop colours through, and the same floor tiles. But the splashback is from the standard range, in a basic cream colour to match the overhead cabinets in there. And no paint upgrade in there either. I don't actually have a decent photo of the bedroom, so this is the best I can do at short notice: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ And this is the retreat at the opposite end: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Ensuite (sorry, old pic - we now have timber venetians on the French doors and of course, some pretty accessories and coordinating towels etc): Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Kids' bathroom: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Laundry: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Phew. That got a bit long. Re: Bathroom tile selection .. what did you choose/have? 5Jan 26, 2010 10:07 pm Thanks for the comments and sharing your experiences guys .. I understand why you went with what you did .. We do have a light beige floor tiling and brown carpet theme going around in our house .. the walls are flokati (something like grey-ish but matches with beige tones) .. All the houses i've been to had white/grey themes, so one of the designers advised us to go with the beige brown shades .. and since my wife likes it, that's how its going to be be .. We'll keep the bath wall tiles white with some feature strips, for the floor .. we'll see if we can get something brown/grey .. we do have small bathrooms, so darks are out .. we want as much light reflected as possible! I'll update this after the coming weekend once we've done the selections .. Great pics on your blogs, I guess it all looks well in the end if you maintain neutral tones .. --- I don't have a signature - just this sentence saying that I don't have one - that'll do! Re: Bathroom tile selection .. what did you choose/have? 6Jan 27, 2010 3:14 pm We chose light creamy colours. You can veiw our exact bathroom colours in our blog (which is part of our signature). I personally find that they make the bathroom look sunnier, more open, and happier, which is what I prefer. I also love the creamy/marble look of the tiles. It really just depends on personal taste, and what look you are going for + the colours through the rest of your house. We did our tile selection over the weekend, my god i haven't seen my wife so stressed out .. lol .. even the shop guy said take her out for a dinner and 2 glasses of red wine should fix her .. lol .. Anyways, we went with white textured tiles (its something like gloss white with waves on it) .. 250x300 and for the floors we got 250x250 in grey/brown .. again textured so it looks like shining metal .. its not too dark and not too light to show dirt .. and yes we wanted our bathrooms to be well lit up which thankfully, the white wall tiles will help achieve .. we're quite happy with it .. and we didn't choose different themes for bathrooms/wc .. all the same .. We've also added granite rock strips to the showers and spa and alongside the sinks for some added decor .. I guess we're trying to mix n match are predominant colours in the house .. mainly Wattyl Flokati F6w, Purest white on ceilings and light beige-white floor tiles with brownish carpets .. Lets see how it turns out to be .. i guess that is the true test at the end of it!
