Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jan 14, 2010 9:56 am We have an ensuite that has been half renovated and is now at a standstill. While we are waiting to get it completed, I've decided to do some research about what we should do. Our house is circa 1959 on stumps with floorboards. The room which is now the ensuite was the original bathroom that we've reconfigured. My questions/queries are: What is the best way to tile the shower floor? How does one 'build' a slope for the water to drain? Is there any company where we can get a custom shower base made? Our shower alcove was originally a doorway next to the linen cupboard. The width is 780mm...all bases I look up are 900mm. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Re: Ensuite suggestions...tiled shower or base? 2Jan 14, 2010 10:19 am Sounds like our tiny old shower in our old house (on stumps with floorboards) ... anyway, we had our shower replaced when we moved in (many moons ago) ... so to answer this: How does one 'build' a slope for the water to drain? - I think the guy will just build up more of the cement/glue/grout/whatever on the sides of the shower, so that the water slopes towards the shower drain. So, you possibly don't need to worry about a ready-made shower base. But, I'm a complete amateur in this, so better to wait for some more H1 expertise, or call a few local tilers My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... I meant to say "... build up more of the cement/glue/grout/whatever on the sides of the shower base, ie. the leave the centre area of the base lower" And we replaced the shower base only, not the whole lot My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Ensuite suggestions...tiled shower or base? 4Jan 14, 2010 12:09 pm If you don't want to tile, there are ready made shower bases which come in all sorts of sizes. Here's a link to the Marbletrend site, we've always got their shower bases for our renos (I personally hate tiled shower bases, that is just my thing !) For instance, on the Project base, they come 760mm width with varying depths - don't know if that helps in your situation..... ? http://www.marbletrend.com.au/products/Showers/12/102 MagicJ I finally have my own reno thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=28335 The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue! Re: Ensuite suggestions...tiled shower or base? 5Jan 27, 2010 10:11 pm I would stay clear of acrylic shower bases. To hard to keep clean. Acrylic shows up all the dirt on your feet and takes a lot of work to keep clean and shiny. If you had the room I would choose a steel based shower base such as the dolphin shower base, otherwise go for a tiled shower base Regards Shane Re: Ensuite suggestions...tiled shower or base? 6Jan 27, 2010 10:29 pm We knew someone who had a base custom made because the space they had wasn't standard. I'm not sure but I think it was a fibreglass base. Whatever you do pay huge attention to the waterproofing, ask about warranties, etc. You don't want to have to rip it all out after a year. Can you tell I've been there, done that? Re: Ensuite suggestions...tiled shower or base? 7Mar 28, 2012 3:21 pm We do custom shower bases that could suit this application - http://www.formed.com.au/S3 If you're in the Melbourne area we can come measure up for you. Cheers Re: Ensuite suggestions...tiled shower or base? 8Apr 03, 2012 7:16 pm on floor boards I'd be more inclined to go with a base. On concrete I'd do tiles. I have seen poly marble shower bases last in excess of 30 years 1 4517 No, I even have sections of narrowness where the tiles won't slide up any further.
