Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jul 27, 2007 11:22 am Hello,
This is my first time here and it's also my first real crack at doing some renovations to my home. I would like to rip up the existing tiles in my bathroom and toilet and re-tile my bathoom, laundry and toilet. They are all joined together. In the bathroom, there are no skirting boards and the floor tiles directly butt up to the wall tiles. I am wanting to keep the wall tiles that are there so I don't want to destroy them while pulling up the floor tiles. Are there any special tricks I need to know about pulling up the tiles? Also, the base of the floor is wood. Do I need to put some kind of underlay down before I tile? Sorry for such a long post. I hope you can help. Here is a picture taken of the bathroom by the previous owner. (gotta love the stickers ). It might help give you an idea of what I am talking about http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m169/nessb1/102124934fl1105071082.jpg Re: Tiling my bathroom floor - wood 2Jul 27, 2007 2:08 pm Hi Opal, I've never tiled but you will have big risk of chiping the wall tiles as you try to lift the floor tiles.
I'd also suggest you tackle a smaller project as your initial job - ie maybe just the toilet first to see how you go at it. From what I've heard tiling is not so hard as fiddly 9 MUST Mearure and make sure everything is square or you run out of room etc, and bad tilling looks BAD and good looks good. Another tip - A mate of mine who has renoed 2 houses lately - he bought a $200 tile cutter and he said it saved him more than that in broken / badly cut tiles on house 1. Good luck. S Re: Tiling my bathroom floor - wood 3Jul 29, 2007 1:26 pm There's probably a pro tiler on here that will correct this or give you better advice, but having done all my own tiling, I'd say just take your time; start pulling your floor tiles up AWAY from the walls and work your way out. When you get to the wall tiles, just try to wriggle them away from the walls. It shouldn't be too hard if you're careful not to pull upwards. Once they are all up, I would be putting down a waterproof membrane. It's not too hard and you can brush it on. Then put down cement sheet as an underlay. When you come to laying the new tiles, don't skimp on cheap glue. Try to use a quality flexible one. As Yak Chat has already been said, make sure you lay to a line and keep your tiles square. If all you can see are obstacles, you have lost sight of the goals Re: Tiling my bathroom floor - wood 4Jul 29, 2007 5:32 pm Hi Opal,
Suggest you protect the wall tiles from chipping and damage by taping thick cardboard up the walls before you go about removing floor tiles. Also, in many homes, the tiles used on the floor are also fitted to the lower first row of the wall tile. So, it has an appearance of like a skirting of like tiles to what's on the floor. (That make sense)? Our bathroom is done this way. We have a sort of sage green 200x200mm tiles on the floor and one tile high up the walls (also the shower recess step etc). The wall tiles are white, so the skirting tiles look nice. And, I recommend you invest in a fine quality power-tool called a Fein Multi-master. It is a German made tool that can do a lot of different things, but is the perfect tool for removing tiles, especially if you need to remove grout or a row of tiles whilst leaving the next row intact. Have fun! Ash. Re: Tiling my bathroom floor - wood 5Jul 31, 2007 7:42 pm Your waterproof membrane must go over the wall/ cement floor sheeting ( as per Aust. Standards) not between it and the timber sub-floor. Possibly both depending on the sizing. Idea of working from the centre is that you dont have a 20mm thin tile at one end and a 400mm at the other end. A quick search on… 3 8414 This is a very tight fit, I'm not sure if you'll be able to achieve what you've described. Would you consider accessing the separate toilet from the laundry?
