Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jan 02, 2010 11:29 am Hi, I have recently just purchased my first property-townhouse. I needed to get the shower fixed due to tiling and waterproofing issues. I was aware from talking with shower/bathroom tradies that it was a fairly serious job requiring removal of hob to properly waterproof. I had someone visit to give a quote and he gave the same spill as other shower people had given over the phone-removal of hob, waterproofing, 2 day job, and simple white tiles on the floor as one of the previous tiles was cracked and this would be too difficult to find same colour etc. Quote was for 800-1000. I agreed and didnt think to ask if he was formally qualified as he seemed to know what he was talking about. (and i was very naive!!) Day 1 of job he removed tile's of shower floor. I questioned him as to why he was not removing the hob as agreed. He said that the waterproofing was still in good condition and didnt requiring any fixing-he showed me a rubber black mat which was layed on the floor. He said this was the waterproofing system and when i questioned him about the hob again and further water proofing he said no such thing was needed/existed. He then laid a cement like mix directly on onto the mat. Total time-1.5hr Day 2- He arrived and said he laid the wrong cement type and that it did not harden properly and that this would need to be removed. He then removed this and rel-laid the cement type mix. I asked him given it isnt the same job he quoted for-removal of hob what would i be looking at paying. He said 700 however i negotiated 600. Total time-45min Day 3- tile's laid. He used dark gray grout and no silicone around edges. All tiles and grout up wall is white. I didnt realize at the time that he hadnt used silicone in edges. 3hrs This is the ensuite bathroom on second floor. I did pay him on completion of job but I am not happy as it appears that he has not done sufficient waterproofing. This was my main concern and what i wanted done due to future problems. I was home by myself on the final day however on the second day he was slightly suggestive and twice the size of me and at the time I didnt feel safe to withhold money. If I could replay the day I would not have paid him. My main question is does this sound like it is not waterproofed? Is the grout in the corners of shower a no go? And should this have been silicone? Should I look at getting this job redone? And if so if he offers to fix it should I refuse as it would appear he isnt properly qualified for this job? And instead look at trying to get my money back? Any other suggestions? Thanks Megan Re: shower waterproofing/bad job??? 2Jan 03, 2010 2:58 pm Give the bathroom a run and if it leaks call a waterproofing contractor Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: shower waterproofing/bad job??? 3Jan 07, 2010 5:33 pm Ive followed this up with a tiler and builder and have been advised not to use shower due to no waterproof system. I was able to negotiate (initially refused) half a refund from person who originally did the job. Informed him without half a refund I would follow through with BSA and if necessary Alternative dispute/small claims. 48 hrs later he agreed to my request of half refund. Luckily I have a second bathroom. So instead will l will be looking at getting the job redone. But all the same im happy and its a cheap learning curve and wont make the same mistake. Ill make sure I do adequate research before not after! Regardless of wall hung toilet or floor pan toilet your feet will be right on drain, seems to me the waste should not be in that location given the design. For timber flooring, for most parts it's fine because it's got base plates, and for door jabs you can… 7 11551 |
