Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Nov 15, 2009 11:54 pm Hello People, I've tried searching in the archives with no result, but was sure some one would have come across this problem before me. Would anyone know please what makes a cold water pipe make a real loud constant wistling noise. I have a hot/cold combo tap in the bathroom basin that when first turned on about half a turn is real quiet. Then when it gets to about a full turn, it gets so loud it becomes unbearable, then after another half turn or so when the water is full throttle, it goes quiet again (the water being too powerfull to wash hands with etc). The water volume which is the most suitable is offcourse when it is the noisiest. I have changed washers using all different rubber, metal, plastic and ball combinations with a negative result. I recently re-seated the washer seat with a stainless steel variety, still to no evail. The hot water side is as quiet as one would expect. Has anyone had this problem or heard of this? as I have run out of ideas. Much appreciated, Humph. Quitting Time is the time between the start of your project and the never ending finish. Re: Loud wistle noise from cold copper pipe 3Nov 16, 2009 11:06 pm Hi Dukekamaya, Dukekamaya Could it be drawing air in from somewhere? Well I'm not sure, would it not be leaking from where it is drawing air? Some other possibilities I've come across are; 1. Too much pressure from the meter to the house. (One would think in that case ALL the taps or cold ones at that will make the same noise) 2. Trapped air, some where inside. (makes sense, however requires a systematic method of opening all taps and closing them gradually from the furthest/lowest tap to the highest or closest to the main in order to assist the air escape up and out of the pipes) I'll try No.2 when I can get a few more hands on deck to not waste too much water.. Thanks Humph Quitting Time is the time between the start of your project and the never ending finish. Re: Loud wistle noise from cold copper pipe 4Dec 03, 2009 10:41 pm Hello Check to see if the plumber has installed mini stop cocks underneath your basin. In the past there have been a few brands that have a small spring inside them that make a noise when water runs through it. These mini stop cocks are usually 1/2 or 1/4 turn taps with a small handle. The only way to fix it is to remove the stop **** and replace it with another brand.
