Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Nov 11, 2009 6:27 pm I have a tiler arriving tomorrow to start tiling my new bathroom and laundry. The tiles I've selected for both areas are a 300x300 floor tile, with a 300x600 wall tile. I'm wanting the tiles laid in the basic pattern so the lines in the floor tiles carry up the wall, if that makes sense. The tiler has told me that it wouldn't look right that way because to get the grout lines to align would mean having a narrower gap between the floor tiles. Instead, he has suggested a brick pattern on the wall.
I really don't want the brick pattern for lots of reasons, including 1/ the bathroom will be modern and I've only seen that pattern on older style bathrooms; 2/ my feature wall tile is a 300x600 tile that has been etched to look like a 50 x 300 and having a brick pattern would clash with this! I'm after suggestions on what to tell my tiler tomorrow to insist he makes the floor and wall lines align, and not do the brick pattern on the wall. Or am I wrong and the tiler right; it will look odd with the minimal grout lines on the floor? Thank you in advance for your comments. Re: Urgent Tiling Advice Needed 4Nov 11, 2009 6:56 pm Are you laying the wall tiles horizontally? If thats the case than you will never get them aligning exactly, as the floor tiles will have a grout line through the middle of the wall tile, and therefor will be wider: 300 tile + 2mm grout + 300 tile. I think you should double check with your tiler about what he exactly means by 'brick pattern' because in this situation it is common to the lay the wall tiles and floor tiles grout lines off center but only in the first course of wall tiles. Then all the wall tile grout lines should be able to line up with each other. This can be tested by dry laying tiles with help of a few people before cutting and glueing tiles. I hope this helps. I would be very hesitant of brick laying 300 x 600 tiles. Porcelains have a tendancy to bow a little and when you brick lay them they end up getting a basket weave effect. I would just ask your tiler to line them up as best as he can. Built with Bentley homes in Doreen All moved in Dec 2009 Now for the garden! I've seen other bathrooms done this way before, how did they achieve it? Did they use a fractionally smaller floor tile, or alternatively larger wall tile? This is 'sometimes' achieved by tilers slightly varying the thickness of the wall and floor tile grout lines to try and make up the difference over a short wall. But you can image 2mm variance over a longer wall with approximately 10 tiles (2mm x 10 tiles = 20mm) can be a bit more difficult to conceal. This is something not all tilers will be able to achieve and some can make a complete mess of things trying.
